Chinese Community Outreach Coordinator
Neighbourhood Helpers Chinese Outreach Project
We require a project coordinator to work in the Downtown Eastside, Chinatown and Strathcona areas of Vancouver. The coordinator will oversee an outreach program and coordinate volunteers aimed at strengthening social support networks among isolated Chinese low-income seniors living in Subsidized Housings/Single Room Accommodation Hotels.
The Chinese Outreach Project Coordinator's duties will include:
? To connect with Chinese seniors in subsidized housing and hotel rooms and provide programs and activities so as to assist them stay away from social isolation.
? Organize and animate regular Chinese tea drop-ins in subsidized housing/SRA hotels.
? Recruit and support volunteers who speak Chinese and ideally English.
? Organize Chinese senior residents to become active on issues impacting their lives.
? Provide appropriate referral services.
? Identify needs and concerns of Chinese seniors in the DTES, Chinatown and Strathcona areas of Vancouver.
? Create action plans and partnership with other organizations to address senior needs.
? Foster the participation of seniors in the community and help them stay independence by accessing needed activities and services.
? Plan and organize recreational programs and outings (i.e., daytrips) to keep seniors active.
? Complete administration tasks including writing reports and proposals as needed.
The candidate will be people-oriented and able to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds along with the demonstrated skills/experience in community development required to build self-reliance and involvement in community issues/concerns among residents.
Desired skills and qualifications:
? An understanding of the needs and issues facing low-income residents in the inner city.
? Ability to find and develop opportunities for partnering with businesses/other agencies to better serve the seniors in the community.
? A broad vision for the program, consistent with our mandate and goals. ? Experience in organizing volunteers and groups.
? Works well in a team environment and with volunteers.
? Ability to listen with empathy.
? Good computer and writing skills.
? A degree, diploma or certificate, preferably in community social service/Social Science or other related fields.
? Fluent in both written and oral Chinese languages (Mandarin and Cantonese).
? To work 32 hours per week (schedule is somewhat flexible as per the needs of the Project).
