Position Overview:
The Children's Coordinator contributes to the overall success of the Housing Program and YWCA Halifax by providing participant-centered child minding for the families at SHYM (Supportive Housing for Young Mothers). The Children's Coordinator researches the best practices in childcare and assists in updating procedures and practices to incorporate best practices.
The Children's Coordinator is responsible for identifying risk management concerns in their area of responsibility when conducting program activities and support. The Children's Coordinator is responsible for following all YWCA procedures, policies, and ensuring they always work safely. The Children's Coordinator contributes to the advancement and achievement of the YWCA mission, vision, values, guiding principles, strategic plan, business plan, and departmental plan. Work is guided by using a Harm Reduction, Participant-Centered, Housing First, and Trauma Informed model.
Essential Duties of the Position
Program Delivery:
Responsible for direct service delivery to families by providing child minding for the children at SHYM.
Facilitate children's programming including playgroups, story time, arts and crafts.
Support ongoing and recurring children's programs
Providing support for children with special needs (i.e. Autism, developmental delays, physical health challenges, etc.)
Responsible for providing a safe, nurturing environment for up to 4 children at one time.
Responsible for planning and implementing activities during childminding, such as developmentally appropriate play, snacks, naps, etc.
Responsible for always maintaining the safety and cleanliness of the childminding spaces.
Responsible for achieving goals/objectives/outcomes and reporting on results in relation to work plans. Responsible for tracking results to outcomes as required.
Ensures high quality of direct service for program participants, assists in administration of program evaluation to assess the strengths of the program and to identify and assess areas for improvement.
Ensure that children's information files are properly maintained and kept confidential.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor's in Child and Youth Studies, certificate in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred, or 3 years work experience working with children and marginalized populations. Experience working with individuals who have multiple barriers, women who are homeless or at risk, women in poverty and those who face mental health and addictions. Strong knowledge of community resources, excellent organizational and communication (both written and oral) skills and the ability to work collaboratively with community partners. Familiar working with evaluation in an outcome-based framework. Ability to work independently and in a team environment, effective interpersonal, high level of computer literacy, ability to maintain collaborative partnerships, internal and external to the organization.
