Child and Youth Worker "CYW" (NOC 4212)



Kennedy House has a long and fine tradition of providing personal care for young people in the Greater Toronto Area. We started with an initial family-like group home in 1971 and have added along the way additional residential programs, a state-of-the-art secure custody facility, bailiff services, day treatment programs, shelter services, developmental services programs, and outreach community services in designated priority neighbourhoods.

At Kennedy House our Residential Services Division works in conjunction with child welfare systems and other organizations to provide individualized plans of care and support. We offer a wide range of gender-specific programs including but not limited to the following: time management, hygiene, transportation, nutrition, self-growth, health & safety, financial management, purchasing and utilization of community resources, job skills & employment preparation and housing & accommodation support.

As a member of the Kennedy House Residential Team, the Child and Youth Worker (CYW) is accountable directly to the Program Supervisor and indirectly to the Program Manager. The CYW is responsible for the care and safety of the clients residing in the residences, and required to work under pressure, while managing conflicting demands and continually changing priorities. They must also enjoy working with people in a Residential Home/Work environment. This position deals with client personal and confidential information and when working in the program, the CYW is required to adhere to the organization's policies which govern confidentiality, privacy, conflict of interest and safety expectations.

Primary Job Function



The primary responsibility of a Child and Youth Worker (CYW) is to provide direct/ongoing therapeutic supervision and care to youth/individuals, as part of their daily living environment. This position may require that the CYW work in a variety of environments including executing programs at multiple locations of client care.

This may include:

Identifying program needs of youth/individuals participating in the development and implementation of plan of cares/safety plans. Developing and implementing life skills and clinical based programs based on the Plan of Care, assisting in monitoring achievement of personal outcomes.

Provide case management to youth/individuals on caseload, providing appropriate care as needed, including medication administration, crisis response, advocating on behalf of individuals supported and liaising with family, medical and other professionals and other service providers to address needs.

Providing life skills training and emotional support to individuals supported on a one-on-one or group basis and referring to professionals when necessary.

Maintaining documentation, monitoring finances, ensuring an appropriate standard of living.

Providing direction to part-time and volunteer staff as required

Supervisory advice and counsel is available as required.

This position may require that the CYW work in a variety of environments including executing programs at multiple locations of resident care.

Activities such as, but not limited to, relationship building techniques, cooking, walking in the community Able and available to work day, afternoon and evening shifts and weekends; Participate, attend and complete all requisite training and/or learning programs. Transport or arrange transport for recreation, medical appointments and other destinations as necessary. Maintain a clean and orderly atmosphere in the residence through completion of housekeeping chores. Follow all Safe Work Practices, Policies and Procedures including abiding by the Occupational Health and Safety act and all Human Resources Policies and Procedures. Follow all Kennedy House Operational Practices, Policies and Procedures' Follow all Kennedy House "Zero Tolerance" Policies and Reporting Procedures.

Qualifications



Completion of a CYW Diploma, or a Community College Diploma/ University degree with a focus on Social Services and Behavioral Science, 1+ year's relevant experience is required.

Completion of Ministry-approved model of training in physical intervention on an annual or as required basis that meets legislative requirements. Mandatory within 30 days of hire.

Current certification in First Aid and CPR C is mandatory within 30 days of hire.

Valid Class G Driver's License is mandatory. Must be maintained and current.

Acceptable Police Check and Vulnerable Sector SearchClearance must be current and maintained.

Demonstrated knowledge of developmental needs (intellectual, emotional, physical, and social) of children and youth

Clinical skills, including experience and ability working with and managing difficult behaviour.

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Broad awareness of other cultures, values, identities and perspectives with a demonstrated ability and interest in working with and for diverse populations

Ability to write legible, clear and concise reports and person-centred plans

Excellent organization skills

Excellent interpersonal skills

Maintain all required immunizations and vaccines

Appropriate attire to be worn at all times and protective equipment available in the program.
