Child Care Centre Dietary Cook/ Housekeeping Assistant
Position Summary
The Dietary Cook / Housekeeping Assistant will assist the Lead Cook with all aspects of meal preparation, baking, cooking, dishwashing, laundry and completion of light cleaning in designated common areas of the child care building in accordance with the mission, philosophy and goals of the organization as well as exceeding public health standards for professional kitchens and following the Child Care and Early Years Act regulations. The

will take pride in serving and presenting high quality to children and keeping an especially clean kitchen.
General Responsibilities
To assist with the preparation, cooking and baking of nutritional, visually pleasing, tasteful, child friendly meals in accordance with the Canada Food Guide and CCEYA using provided set recipes on a 6 week rotational basis.
Ensure food production coordinates with multiple meal types and serving time schedules throughout the day
Memorize, record, and comprehend menu items, abbreviations, dietary restrictions, allergies, and portions
Follow all child care centre regulations and policies
Assist to compile grocery lists and place grocery orders weekly
Assist to receive and inspect weekly food deliveries
Operate standard kitchen equipment safely and efficiently
Adhere to all sanitation and food production regulations from the Middlesex London Health Unit and the Child Care and Early Years Act
Clean and maintain kitchen equipment, utensils, and appliances to a very high standard
Use commercial dishwasher and three sink method
Maintain a very high standard of cleanliness and food safety at all times and ensure the kitchen exceeds public health standards at all times
Ensure professionalism and confidentiality at all times
Assist with the effective implementation of all health and safety policies of the organization in order to ensure the protection of children and adults in the programs.
To assist with light cleaning and disinfecting of common areas as required.
To use onsite washing machine and dryer to wash, dry and fold bibs, face cloths, and cot sheets and blankets.
To sustain a positive image of the organization.
To exhibit professional attitudes and behaviour.
To act as resource to colleagues, parents, students and volunteers.
Functions Areas
Assist with all aspects of meal and snack preparation:
Ensure food is prepared to accommodate any allergy and food restrictions of children and prevent cross contamination.
Assist in all tasks related to food preparation, cooking, baking.
Assist staff with any nutritional activities which may be incorporated into the program.
Assist with the preparation of food for special occasions such as parent meetings, board meetings and staff meetings when necessary.
To document and keep records as required.
Assist with cleaning the kitchen area and designated common areas:
Assist with the cleaning of the kitchen and the food storage areas to ensure they are maintained in a sanitary, orderly and safe condition to a high standard.
Assist with maintaining all kitchen materials in a sanitary and safe condition.
Assist with the maintenance of all kitchen appliances in good working condition.
Assist with dishwashing. Both by hand and with commercial Dishwasher
Contribute to the ongoing operation of the centre:
Inform the Lead Cook or Supervisor of any shortage of supplies.
Inform the Lead Cook, Supervisor or Executive Director of concerns related to kitchen/maintenance areas.
Attend any staff meeting or professional development as required.
Maintain a positive, professional demeanor with staff, parents, children and suppliers.
Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
Professional Development:
Participate in any professional development activities deemed appropriate for the position responsibilities.
Maintain current Standard First Aid and Level C CPR training and Food Handler Certification at all times.
Child Care Centre Dietary Cook/ Housekeeping Assistant
will maintain ongoing communication with the Supervisor or Executive Director with regard to any needs or concerns as expressed by staff, parents, children or community.
Child Care Centre Dietary Cook/ Housekeeping Assistant
may assume other functions that may not be included in this position description. Any additional functions will be discussed and be mutually agreed upon.
Qualifications
Educational and Additional Requirements:
A minimum of High School Diploma ( red seal for culinary focus preferred)
Community college certificate or diploma in culinary arts preferred.
At least 1 year experience in fast paced food preparation or professional kitchen environment experience an asset
Current valid Food Handlers Certificate Required
Current Standard First Aid and level C CPR certificate
Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Check required
Must be legally able to work in Canada
Knowledge and Experience:
Knowledge of nutritional requirements of children in accordance with Canada Food Guide and Child Care and Early Years Act,2014.
Knowledge of characteristic food habits of children.
Knowledge of preparation of recipes from diverse cultures.
Experience in meeting demands of a busy serving schedule
Knowledge and experience with sanitation principles related to food and food services.
Knowledge and experience with the operation and maintenance of appliances.
