One-year contract with the possibility of extension

Position Summary:



The primary role of the Youth Worker is to develop, direct and facilitate youth programming. In addition, the Youth Worker will work with the Outreach Coordinator. The Youth Worker reports to the Executive Director.

Principle Responsibilities and Accountability:



Work in collaboration with outreach coordinator, parents, and youth to identify the holistic needs of the referred individual. Provide youth violence prevention programming. Assist in providing and promoting family violence prevention programming. Facilitate meetings with students and teacher advisors. Promote and provide family violence prevention activities in the community. Represent the organization with other youth-oriented groups. Provide complementary services when required to the Outreach Coordinator's caseload as it relates to the youth and children. This can include one-on-one support, advocacy, referrals, or assisting parents to understand the unique needs of their children.

Public Education and Prevention:



Promote the agency as a referral source. Promote engagement with communities in family violence prevention activities and programs. Provide presentations on the issues of violence prevention in youth relationships. This will include updating the presentation material in response to changing needs or emerging issues pertaining to youth. Participate in community workshops or committees related to the subject of youth violence prevention.

Administration:



Write reports as required Keep appropriate records of activities Meet and consult regularly with Outreach Team and/or Executive Director

Other Responsibilities:



Keep informed of youth violence prevention initiatives Participate in staff meetings, performance evaluations and staff training opportunities Maintain awareness of Association's other services, programs and projects

Position Specification



Education and Training:

A diploma in youth worker services from a recognized college or In the absence of a diploma, a combination of experience and training may be considered
Experience:

Three years' experience working with youth with a focus on education and social action Experience in presenting information to public groups Have experience with group work
Skills and Knowledge:

Good verbal and written communication skills Good computer skills Have ability to work independently and as part of a team Be organized and adaptable Have non-judgmental attitudes and beliefs Have a commitment to personal growth and development An interest in violence prevention with and for youth Have good time management skills and meets deadlines effectively

Environment:



This position works in an office environment with subject matter requiring a high degree of confidentiality. This includes sensitivity in maintaining the confidentiality of youth clients when liaising with parents. The Youth Worker must be able to interact with groups in a variety of community settings which may require travel. The Youth Worker must be able to interact with people from diverse economic, educational, and cultural backgrounds. The Youth Worker must be able to work flexible hours. The Youth Worker will direct youth to appropriate resources for assistance with additional problems such as substance-misuse, or physical/mental health issues.

This is a unionized position and all terms and conditions of employment are governed by a collective agreement between the FVPS Inc. and The Union of Operating Engineers Local 942.

Wage Range:

$23.12 - $28.46 per hour
