Being the first and only Indigenous pediatric healthcare program in North America, the Awasisak Indigenous Health Program strives to meet the unique and complex needs of our patients and families. Hearing and responding to the voices of various Indigenous communities, the position of Indigenous Child and Family Engagement Coordinator (EC) was created. Tailoring to different patients and families\' needs, the EC provides services and supports in a responsive and empathetic manner; the services and supports provided by the EC include but are not limited to: resource-based intervention, patient advocacy, and facility introduction and navigation. Another critical responsibility of the EC is being the \xe2\x80\x9cbridge-builder\xe2\x80\x9d promoting respect and understanding between patient, family, and the care team. Providing consultation supports and education/teaching opportunities, the EC also works with the care team to ensure they practice with a culturally safe approach, as well as build and deepen the trust of the Awasisak Program and the Stollery Children\'s Hospital. As the EC you will have the honor of connecting patients and families to traditional healing practices and work closely with the Indigenous Cultural Advisor. Lastly, the EC is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and building relationships with a diverse range of FNMI populations, communities, and organizations. Acting as a \xe2\x80\x9chost\xe2\x80\x9d to the patients and families of the Awasisak Program, the Child and Family Engagement Coordinator (EC) fosters a culturally safe environment and ensure patients and families feel safe during their hospital stay/visit. Basic assessment of non-medical needs and Resource-Based Interventions. Provision of hospitality, problem-solving and advocacy for Indigenous children and their families in various life situations and crisis circumstances at the Stollery. Act as a \xe2\x80\x9cbridge builder\xe2\x80\x9d on the multidisciplinary team helping to promote respect and understanding between Indigenous child and their family and staff of the hospital or community. Provide leadership in awareness and activities that help Alberta Health Service staff and physicians embrace Indigenous peoples and their cultures. Share with other Stollery programs and services ways to work with Indigenous peoples in respectful and caring ways. Fulfill administrative duties respectful of sacred boundaries and confidentiality. The EC may be the first point of for our patients and so will introduce themselves, explain about the Awasisak program and eventually introduce patient and families to other members of the team.
