John Ross & Sons is a fourth-generation, family-owned international scrap metal recycling business, operating for over 80 years, with eleven locations, making us the largest recycling facility in Atlantic Canada and one of the largest exporters out of The Port of Halifax.

Position Overview


Reporting directly to the CEO, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will lead the company's day-to-day operations across all yards. This senior leadership role is accountable for driving operational efficiency, ensuring safety and profitability targets are met, and strengthening collaboration across regional teams.


A major focus of this role is building strong relationships with Regional Managers and front-line teams, with regular site visits across Atlantic Canada to ensure engagement, accountability, and operational excellence.


Key Responsibilities

Oversee all operational functions including production, transportation, yard operations, and maintenance. Develop and implement strategies to improve efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness across all sites. Collaborate with Logistics and Yard Management to ensure the efficient processing and movement of material out of the Yard. Implement KPI-driven performance management to track productivity, safety, and profitability across sites. Collaborate with senior leadership on strategic planning, capital investment, and growth initiatives. Build and mentor a high-performing operations team. Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations across all facilities. Oversee maintenance planning for equipment, fleet, and site infrastructure.


Qualifications

10+ years of progressive leadership experience in operations. Degree in Business, Operations Management, Engineering, or a related field (MBA an asset). Strong financial and analytical acumen with experience managing budgets, margins, and KPIs. Demonstrated ability to lead multi-site operations and large teams in a fast-paced environment. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
