Our Team:

The Mines Technical Services team is responsible for maintaining a variety of functions including mine planning, scheduling, surveying, backfill, ventilation, ground control, metrics tracking, production statistics data input/review, incentives administration, annual capital plan development, and operating and capital cost tracking for variances.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Chief Ground Control Engineer to join our Mining Technical Services team supporting the Creighton mine in Sudbury, Ontario. This is a permanent position.

The supports mine execution of the Ground Control Program and Seismic Risk Management Plans in Vale\xe2\x80\x99s Sudbury Mine facilities. This role oversees all aspects of ground control duties at an underground mine in Ontario Operations. The role holder works with an effective ground control team, including Ground Control Engineers, Mine Technician/Technologists and/or Engineers in Training, to provide Ground Control Services to the mine operations.

dditionally, in this position you will:

  • Audit and analyze systems within the area(s) of accountability to achieve the following outputs:
  • Zero harm to employees, the business, the environment, and the community,
  • Achieve/exceed production quality and quantity targets while improving economic resource recovery.
  • Achieve total product and unit cost, and capital expenditure targets.
  • Recommend actions to ensure that the safety and stability of mine excavations are maintained with respect to geotechnical, Vale\xe2\x80\x99s policies/standards and legislated requirements.
  • Update Mine Design Package on an annual basis with inputs from various departments at a mine site.
  • Provide day-to-day technical support and coordination for managing the site-specific Ground Control and Seismic Risk Management Programs; and work closely with the technical execution teams at the mine sites.
  • Assist at the mine operation to conduct geomechnical risk assessment of the annual mine execution plans to ensure that mining sequence and mine layouts are optimized to reduce the risk to safety and production.
  • Accountable for stewardship of ore reserve and life of mine plan, develop and recommend mining plans, ground support systems and development plans.
  • Knowledge of Rock Mechanics modeling software (MAP3D, Rocscience programs and FLAC3D).
  • Ground control instrumentation knowledge.
  • Contribute to the implementation of new systems/processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide performance feedback to team members, mentor team, lead and ensure safe production behaviors are exhibited, and take corrective action when necessary to address noncompliance.
About You

Education:
  • Degree in Mining with a P. Eng.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in Underground Execution Technical Services.
Skills:
  • Knowledge of mining standards and guidance documents.
  • Underground mine design, mining technology, and high level of understanding of underground mining activities.
  • Knowledge of engineering planning software (Deswik) is recommended.
  • Strong people leadership skills, including mentoring and coaching skills
  • Strategic thinking and effective decision making.
  • Change management skills and openness to learning and sharing new insights.
  • Building relationships, collaboration and teamwork.
  • Drive for sustainable results with a strong focus on continuous improvement.
