Reporting to the President, the CFO is responsible for overseeing Avana\'s performance-driven financial strategy and operations. The successful candidate will have a proven track record with a minimum of ten years in a senior financial leadership role. The CFO should have the desire to lead by example in both work and culture, be proactive and strategic in their work, be committed to continuous improvement, and demonstrate an ability to be a strong team member that believes in learning and growth both personally and for others.

Responsibilities:
Financial Management:
  • Managing and reporting on all financial and fiduciary affairs of the organization, while overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Accounting and Financing Divisions.
  • Recommends the financial strategy for reaching the organization\'s goals, and regularly monitors and analyzes financial results and internal controls to advise the board of directors, senior leadership, and the management team.
  • Lead all financial reporting to ensure effective and timely information is available for decision-making while working with external accountants to ensure annual audits and finance-related reporting requirements are met.
  • Lead the budgeting and financial forecasting for the organization.
  • Lead the timely and accurate preparation of tax returns, regular tax filings, and tax planning.
  • Oversee, develop, and lead a high-performing Accounting Division with a primary focus on accuracy, quality, and innovation, while supporting the Controller and other team members as a coach and mentor.
  • Prepare, report, and attend regular operational and leadership meetings to update on the progress of Avana\'s operations, goals, and financial statements.
  • Establish a process of continuous improvement within the Division and support similar initiatives across the organization.
  • Establish and maintain controls to safeguard assets, while documenting and recommending improvements to internal financial policies and procedures.
Financing & Treasury:
  • Ensure accurate and timely construction draws, project cost certifications, and other specialized reporting to banks and government agencies.
  • Manage and monitor the organization\'s cash flow and real estate development capital needs by maintaining and improving existing cash management planning and reporting.
  • Oversee the review and implementation of various liability and insurance policies.
  • Build and manage effective relationships with financing advisors and Avana\'s lending/financial institutions.
  • Supports the investment of excess funds in coordination with third-party advisors.
Organizational Strategy & Results:
  • Together with the President and senior leadership team, develops the strategy to ensure that the organization has the financial resources needed to achieve its current and future goals while mitigating financial and operational risk.
  • As a member of the senior leadership team, participate in and support Avana\'s corporate strategy development and the leadership of key strategic initiatives.
  • Effectively represent Avana as an advocate and champion for social change in the communities Avana serves.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key partners including corporate and social partners, banks, government agencies, consultants, and vendors.
  • As required, support the review of key legal agreements, including mortgages and loan documents, asset purchase and sale agreements, and grant-related funding agreements.
  • Working with the Strategy Division, support the management and development of existing and future performance management systems.
  • Support the development of organizational asset management practices to ensure effective oversight and management.
Qualifications:
  • 10 - 15 years of experience in a senior financial leadership role.
  • Bachelor\'s degree in business or related discipline and a CPA designation are required.
  • Knowledge of Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) is required, and Non-profit accounting standards are an asset.
  • Project Champion- experience in selecting and implementing a new ERP system is an asset.
  • Experience in a high-growth private company, with preference given to those with previous real estate and multi-project financing experience.
  • Effective decision-maker and strategic advisor with exceptional communication skills.
