Chef - Cabana Desolation Eco Resort
Cabana Desolation Eco Resort is a remote, off-grid sea kayaking focused retreat on Kinghorn Island in Desolation Sound, offering an intimate and sustainable escape for up to 10-12 guests. Completely off the grid, with no other structures or services on the island, the resort provides a unique blend of seclusion, natural beauty, and exceptional hospitality.
We are looking for a skilled and adventurous chef to craft a fresh, locally inspired menu while living and working on the island for the season (mid-June to mid-September). The chef is the heart of our culinary experience, responsible for preparing breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts and snacks, using high-quality ingredients with a focus on presentation and creativity.
While guests may seek a plant-forward menu, the chef should also be comfortable working with meat proteins, including beef and seafood. Dietary accommodations (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, etc.) are essential to our personalized approach to service.
The Experience
Unlike traditional restaurant or resort roles, this is an immersive, off-grid experience, ideal for someone who thrives in a close-knit team environment and who enjoys the beauty of nature and interacting with guests. While the chef remains at Cabana for most of the short season, there are two scheduled breaks in mid-July and mid-August, providing the opportunity to leave the island for a short recharge.
Each day brings a natural rhythm, balancing culinary creativity with island life. Mornings might begin with ocean views and fresh air, followed by crafting a beautiful breakfast. Downtime throughout the day allows for relaxation or a little exploration, while evenings are spent curating memorable dinners for our guests.
The team consists of the chef and two rotating kayak guides, who assist in the kitchen when they are not guiding guests. An off-island management team helps with logistics as they go to/from the island throughout each week. The experience is social yet peaceful, offering the chance to connect with both guests, guides and nature in a way few other roles can.
Logistics & Off-Grid Living
• Supplies are transported twice weekly via a 22' open-air aluminum boat, between Cabana and Okeover Base (a 20-minute crossing in calm conditions).
• With no docks at either location, the boat is nosed onto the beach for loading and unloading, then anchored offshore while tasks are completed.
• Supplies include: fresh food, potable water, propane, and laundry, while waste and compost are removed.
• Power is solar-generated, and water comes from a licensed spring--both requiring mindful use.
