Position Summary
The Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta is looking to fill the position of Chair, Department of Computing Science as of July 1, 2026. Candidates must hold a tenured appointment as full-time academic faculty members in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta.
The Department of Computing Science is one of Canada's largest and oldest computing science departments, and a world leader in the field. It also has an excellent Outreach Program. The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is also a key player, as one of three institutions in the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy. The Department has 51 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 7 academic teaching staff who are recognized for their excellence in research and teaching at the international, national, and university level. The Department's student population includes approximately 561 graduate students, 2,426 undergraduate honors, specialization students and majors/minors students. Approximately 7,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in Computing Science courses each term. The Department's annual operating grant totals approximately $17.8 million, while annual research funding expenditures total approximately $13.3 million.
