Those looking for more information are invited to visit our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy The Cereals and Oilseeds Development Officer will be responsible for providing, in partnership with industry, leadership in identifying new crop industry opportunities with potential for increased value. This position will also co-ordinate and deliver advice, assistance and information to clients and other staff on the production, harvesting and storage of oilseed, cereal, and forage crops. The Officer will also be responsible for program delivery and guidance as it relates to the Cereal and Oilseed sector. Duties will include:
  • Develop and implement a communications plan for providing technical information on the production, harvesting and storage of cereals and oilseeds.
  • Provide technical information to farmers, crop advisors, government personnel and industry organizations on field crop production, harvesting and storage.
  • Develop and implement necessary systems to search for new opportunities (including additional field crops), new market opportunities for existing crops, and ways to increase returns from all field crops.
  • Develop and implement ways of integrating new combinations of rotations for field crops, with potatoes.
  • Identify and initiate processes to carry out research in cooperation with appropriate research organizations
  • Initiate and coordinate on-farm demonstration projects in co-operation with other departmental staff, farm commodity groups, individual farmers, and agri-business
  • Review project proposals and applications to programs to ensure that they meet the program criteria; arrange meetings of program approval committees if relevant.
  • Ensure program guidelines and administrative policies are followed for each project and client file;
  • Review financial claims for projects, ensure program expenditures align with contract agreements for funding and all necessary documentation and reporting is received, and recommend projects for payment.
  • Develop and revise program technical and promotional information, application forms and funding contracts.
  • Prepare briefing notes and industry profiles for use by the Minister and Deputy Minister of Agriculture and other government senior management;
  • Maintain appropriate records of client and other contacts per Records Information Management requirements;
  • Represent the department on regional and /or national committees;
Minimum Qualifications:
  • M. Sc. in Plant Science specializing in Agronomy or a similar speciality and experience in developing and implementing a crop extension program OR B.Sc. in Plant Science specializing in Agronomy or a similar speciality and considerable related experience in developing and implementing a similar crop extension program OR A technical diploma in a related field and extensive experience in developing and implementing a similar crop extension program.
  • Demonstrated equivalencies may be considered;
  • Experience in computer applications and applied research.
  • Must be eligible for membership in the Prince Edward Island Institute of Agrologists
  • Must have a valid Prince Edward Island driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and the provision of a vehicle.
  • The successful applicant must provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check prior to beginning employment
  • Must have excellent skills in written and oral communication;
  • Must have strong interpersonal and teamworking skills.
Other Qualifications:
  • Certified Crop Advisor accreditation would be an asset
