The Nova Scotia College of Early Childhood Education (NSCECE) is Atlantic Canada\'s first provider of early childhood education. Located in the heart of Halifax, Nova Scotia, with three lab schools (childcare centres), their faculty, staff, and students share a passion for early childhood education and are proud to provide life-shaping experiences to the children, families, and the communities they serve. The expectation of their programs is for early childhood educators to model the ingredients of quality childcare that are taught in the academic program and to implement a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate, responsive to the needs of the community, and utilizes the Early Curriculum Framework. The NSCECE is opening a new child care centre in Port Hawkesbury, opening late May 2023.

On behalf of our client, we are currently recruiting for a Centre Director to join their team of dedicated professionals in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia. The Centre Director will have the opportunity to create and grow their team of educators and help to open a brand-new licensed child care centre.

Reporting directly to the Director, Early Learning and Child Care Programs, the primary function of the Centre Director is to support and promote quality early learning environments for children and for those who teach children. Beyond administrative leadership, this position demands leadership which is the foundation for the day-to-day operations of the child care centre. The Centre Director is a member of the NSCECE management team and as such will be consulted and be a key informant on all decisions regarding the delivery of child care centre operations. The Centre Director is responsible for:

  • Organizing and managing resources and time
  • Connecting with children and families
  • Staff management and mentoring
  • Student teacher support and training
  • Connecting with communities and other organizations
Duties and Responsibilities:

Administration
  • Ensure that policies and procedures associated with NSCECE and the government licensing standards and regulations are upheld including the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Department of Advanced Education
  • Openly communicate with Director, Early Learning and Child Care Programs to ensure operational information is shared on a regular basis
  • Submit all information, reports and records as requested or required by law to appropriate government officials, after signature of signing authority has been collected. Original files to be kept on site and a copy at the NSCECE
  • Attend and participate in Director/Administrator meetings Centre Directors and College staff when requested
  • Regularly attend and participate in committee meetings including but not limited to the lab school advisory committee, family committee, inclusion coordinator committee, etc.
  • Report on child care centre activities for board meetings including our annual general meeting (AGM)
  • Sit on Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHS)
  • Manage physical facilities and ensure all equipment and materials are maintained and replaced as required
  • Maintain child, staff and volunteer files in accordance with government regulations
  • Design and implement fundraising activities as needed
  • Represent NSCECE on a variety of at community organizations/committees when requested or at discretion of Executive Director and Director, Early Learning and Child Care Programs
  • Ensure health and safety of children, families and educators is maintained
Financial
  • With the Director, Corporate Services and Director, Early Learning and Child Care Programs determine staff training and/or equipment needs of all child care centre employees, considering annual budget allocations
  • Invoice families
  • Invoice subsidy and income assistance as required
  • Collect and receipt monthly parent fees for deposit and make bank deposits
  • Receipt all money received including donations and fundraising
  • Communicate monthly financials with NSCECE Finance Manager
  • Follow purchasing protocol for purchase of materials and resources for child care programs, special projects and office
  • Provide feedback for annual budget review
  • In co-ordination with the Director, Corporate Services and Director, Early Learning and Child Care Programs apply for funding for financial support through provincial and federal grants
  • Send biweekly timesheet to Accounting
Program
  • Ensure the implementation of an innovative educational experience through play-based pedagogy based upon Capable, Confident & Curious: NS Early Learning Curriculum Framework
  • Maintain an ongoing annual system of program evaluation through a variety of strategies (ECERS, ITERS, family survey, Continuous Quality Assessment, etc.)
  • Review and evaluate programs, policies, and procedures annually with other Child Care Centre Directors, Director Early Learning and Child Care Programs and Executive Director. Ensure program demonstrates what is being taught at NSCECE and follows best practices
  • Ensure an emergent curriculum is being implemented for the children\'s learning
Staff
  • With direction and assistance of the Director, Early Learning and Child Care Programs - recruit and interview early childhood educators through networking and advertising ensuring 2/3 ratio is met at all times
  • Ensure all educators have up to date credentials such as criminal reference checks, vulnerable sector checks, ECE classification/professional development, food safety handling, child guidance, etc.
  • Supervise, observe, mentor and evaluate all child care centre employees encouraging open communication between team members (educators, summer students, cook, etc.)
  • Provide support in obtaining professional development based on performance assessments and interest of employee as it relates to child care
  • Ensure that early childhood educators have minimum 10 hours professional development annually in order to maintain their ECE classification
  • Provide leadership to child care centre personnel through effective objective setting, delegation, and communication
  • Facilitate monthly staff meetings and maintain staff scheduling
  • Support educators in their role as student mentors
  • Support and mentor educators as they observe, plan, document and assess children\'s learning
Requirements/Certifications:
  • Child Abuse Registry Letter
  • Valid First Aid / CPR Certification
  • Police Background Check
  • Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Nova Scotia Early Childhood Education Classification 2 or 3
  • Managerial experience
  • Experience in a child care setting leadership role is an asset
