We also proactively respond to environmental, conservation, animal, and human health risks and work to develop programs and deliver services to enhance protection in these areas.About Our OpportunityReporting to the Manager, Protected Areas & Ecosystems, the Central Regional Coordinator is responsible for overseeing Protected Areas Programs in the Central Region. Primarily, the role provides leadership and coordination to the management of protected wilderness areas and nature reserves. The Central Regional Coordinator is the programs sole staff member in the region, but is supported by a staff team within the program and other provincial departments. The Central Regional Coordinator will interact with industry and non-government partners, community groups, conservation and recreation organizations, and others to advance land protection goals and protected area management priorities.Primary AccountabilitiesThe Central Regional Coordinator will be involved in: stakeholder and public partnerships and consultations, undertaking science based field assessments and evaluations, compiling public communication materials, preparing reports and planning documents, negotiating and overseeing various land use agreements and licences, and identifying and coordinating area management priorities, (including scientific research, economic development, site monitoring, and enforcement) and will support the designation of new protected areas as required. The employee may also be involved in GIS data management and mapping, policy development, process facilitation, and collaborative planning.Qualifications and ExperienceA Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in a related area of concentration (protected areas management, environmental planning, conservation biology, outdoor recreation, land management and Forestry) is requiredCandidates must have demonstrated experience in a related field such as land conservation or management, land use planning or protected areas planning, and have a practical understanding of current issues and best practice approaches in and protected areas management.Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in a related area of concentration and at least 2 years related experience,Demonstrated project management experience and partnership building skills are essential . The successful candidate needs to be self-directed, have excellent problem solving and organizational skills, and have the sound judgement and critical thinking skills that are necessary to resolve complex and sensitive issues. Experience in public land use planning, policy development, public consultation, and facilitation is an asset. Strong field competencies such as ecological/recreation inventories, remote first aid, navigation, and wilderness travel are essential.The candidate must be proficient with computer word processing, graphic presentation, and spreadsheet software. General familiarity with the application of GIS to planning is required, and advanced knowledge and capability with ESRI GIS software is considered an asset.Knowledge of provincial and federal legislation, regulations, policies, and programs relevant to land management in Nova Scotia is essential.
