Reporting to the Alternative Response Unit Sergeant, Cell Block Monitors monitor and safeguard persons in the custody of the Kingston Police on a 24-hour basis, 7 days per week. This position is permanent part-time, and employees are expected to be available to work on a continuous, weekly basis in accordance with a set schedule of up to twenty (20) hours per week, which may include weekend, evening, night, and/or day shifts. Shifts are six (6) hours in length, with a 30-minute break.

Responsibilities
Monitor all prisoners to ensure their security and well-being
Observe and perform visual checks on prisoners every 15 minutes via walkthrough of prisoner cell block
Maintain cellblock security, ensuring all areas remain locked at all times
Organize and distribute meals, record prisoner activity and maintain a prisoner activity logbook
Record and report any damages or repairs to cells
Conduct searches of cells prior to occupation and when cells are vacated
Ensure all personal effects removed from prisoners are properly secured and recorded
Ensure prisoners receive their prescription medication as required, under the supervision of the Watch Commander
Monitor fire safety and be familiar with fire general orders
Prepare reports or statements upon request
Testify in court as required
Required Qualifications
Candidates must have:
completed a minimum Grade 12 or equivalent
valid First Aid Certificate - CPR Level C
ability to pass the Cell Block Monitor psychological assessment
ability to deal with clients in a tactful and courteous manner
demonstrated discretion and integrity in safeguarding confidential information
ability to communicate in a professional manner, ensuring accurate information is conveyed
self-motivation and be able to work with minimal supervision
high level of attention to detail and accuracy in work
