Casual Assistants provide support to our homes and programs during times when Assistants are absent due to vacation, training, sickness, or other commitments that take them away from their usual duties.
Ensures the well-being of the Core People during the night hours. Along with monitoring Core People, the Overnight Awake Assistant is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, secure, comfortable, quiet, and clean living and working environment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Reviews daily journals as applicable and house communication books for all days since the last time the Overnight Awake Assistant was in the home.
Monitors Core People during the night hours and ensures their safety. This requires that the Overnight Awake Assistant is awake and available at all times and carries a cell phone and baby monitor or buzzer at all times.
Keeps hourly sleep observation records of Core People.
Ensures that the physical, emotional, and health care needs (including medication administration) of Core People are being met. Maintains accurate reports with regard to Core People and ensures that all documentation is correct and complete.
Takes care of Core People's night needs (medical, toileting, etc.) that may arise and deals with any behavioral problems. In the case of an emergency, when assistance is needed, contact the designated House Assistant for additional support.
Ensures that there is good written communication in daily journals and/or house communication books, as well as good verbal communication with House Assistants. Notifies the House Assistant responsible for the morning routine of any issues or problems that have arisen during the night.
Carries out directions left by the House Leader and/or House Assistants regarding specific Core People.
Performs light housekeeping, laundry, food preparation, and maintenance duties quietly, as directed by the House Leader or other designated House Assistants. Reports maintenance needs, as well as health and safety concerns, in the house communication books.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of medication administration, internal fire regulations and procedures, and other emergency procedures.
Walk around the entire building to ensure windows and doors are kept closed at all times.
Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications, Skills Needed, and Position Requirements:
Completion of Grade 12, or the equivalent education
Experience supporting adults with developmental disabilities or seniors is preferred
CPR & First Aid certification or training
At least 18 years of age
Knowledgeable about L'Arche history, values, and vision, and a desire to actively integrate these values into the support of all community members.
Ability to take direction and follow through on commitments in a timely fashion
