Failure to submit both application and questionnaire by July 22, 2024 at 4:00 pm will remove your application from consideration.Job SummaryCampus Security Services is a department within the Vice President Finance and Operations portfolio that provides security, personal safety, emergency planning, parking and motor pool services to the campus community at the University of Victoria. In providing these services, Campus Security contributes to creating a safe, secure and welcoming campus for all and to the overall mission of the University by providing exceptional customer service in all aspects of the operation. The critical nature of these services are provided 24/7/365.Campus Security Services serves a diverse client base including students, employees and visitors. The department\'s 46 employees work together as a team to ensure a high standard of customer service delivery, as well as the effective, efficient and safe adherence to university policies. Together, we support UVic\'s vision to be a university of choice for outstanding students, faculty, and staff from Canada and around the world and to enhance UVic\'s reputation among the best universities in Canada and the world. The University has a population that consists of almost 5000 employees as well as over 22,000 students and over 150 buildings on 163 hectares and 20 parking lots containing over 4200 stalls.The Security Officer reports to the Patrol Manager and designated Team Leader and is responsible for providing impartial security services that enhance personal safety and protection for all members of the University Community, responding to security concerns in a service-oriented manner, investigating complaints and incidents, and ensuring compliance with security standards and university policies to maintain a secure campus environment. Security Officers are responsible for ensuring the physical security of the campus as well as managing the associated liability of the assets within the campus.Campus Security Services provides 24/7/365 service to the campus community in shifts up to 12 hours in length.Job RequirementsAble to:
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Provide clear and concise directions in emergency or high-stress situations.
  • Handle contentious or sensitive issues with discretion and integrity.
  • Empathize and apply a trauma-informed approach to crisis situations.
  • Demonstrate initiative in de-escalation and problem resolution.
  • Perform multiple tasks concurrently and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Pay attention to detail and maintain accurate incident documentation.
  • Type a minimum of 35 words per minute.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a diverse team.
  • Utilize standard office equipment and software (e.g., MS Office, Teams).
Additional requirements:
  • Mechanical ability to monitor and operate security devices and perform minor equipment repairs.
  • Capability to carry out patrol duties, including climbing stairs and performing first aid procedures.
  • Availability to work up to 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Valid BC Driver\'s License.
  • Occupational First Aid Certificate - Level II, including CPR.
  • Justice Institute of British Columbia - Valid Security Worker License.
Specialized Knowledge/Education:
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent
The following are required prior to commencement of employment and must be maintained as a condition of employment:
  • Valid BC Driver\'s License
  • Occupational First Aid Certificate- Level II including CPR
  • Justice Institute of British Columbia - Valid Security Worker License
