Description of Duties and Responsibilities



With the assistance of a Registered Nurse and Support Workers, the LPN will collaborate with interdisciplinary team members and other healthcare and service providers to deliver a client-centered, trauma-informed approach to care. The role includes providing comprehensive physical and mental health assessments and referrals, delivery of harm reduction supplies, supervised consumption clinical interventions and education, take home naloxone distribution, sexual health and other health education and support, and referrals to other health & social services. Other duties may include immunizations, distribution of safer sex and drug use supplies, and basic wound care.

Primary Duties:



Completes pre-injection, post-injection assessments and monitors individuals' health for the duration of the SCS visit. In collaboration with the Registered Nurse (George Spady Society location only), responds to overdose and other emergency requirements, when necessary (e.g. naloxone, oxygen, ventilation, CPR), as per established protocols. Works collaboratively with individuals, health care professionals and community services in the identification and resolution of health issues and integration of care, making referrals to other service providers as appropriate. Provides case management/coordination of care to SCS individuals, as required. Provides basic abscess and wound care related to injection drug use, blood-borne pathogens and sexually transmitted infections (BBPSTI), pregnancy testing and immunizations, and discusses and addresses other emerging medical issues as required. Using a harm reduction approach, provides education on overdose prevention, safer injection techniques, substance use, sexual health, and other high-risk behaviours. Assists management with policy development, research and evaluation, and quality. Maintains standards of nursing practice and develops professional competence through training and educational opportunities, as required by the employer and regulatory body. With the support of other team members, ensures that every individual involved in activities with illicit substances complies with the exemption requirements, in accordance with Health Canada's terms and conditions. Provides an ongoing commitment to individuals within the SCS and continuously strives for the most effective and appropriate delivery of care.

Position Requirements



A minimum of a diploma in Nursing, with 3 to 5 years of experience providing health services to clients. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) or the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) Good standing in registration with regulatory bodies, as appropriate Strong understanding of health and mental health resources in the community and an ability to develop and foster community links and networks aligned with community health integration. Familiarity with and supportive of harm reduction and recovery practice Knowledge of trauma-informed service provision approaches and best practice. Able to use their own vehicle and purchase a minimum of $2 million in liability coverage. Able to submit a clean criminal record check. Ability to travel to meetings and appointment. Ability to work as a respectful and engaged member of a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrated level of maturity, including ability to work in an independent and ethical manner respecting staff and client confidentiality. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Hours of Work:

4 to12-hour shifts.
