The Township of Springwater, located in the heart of Simcoe County, is a mixed urban/rural municipality with growing urban settlements and a prosperous agricultural sector. The municipality is currently recruiting for the casual position of Arena Operator at the Elmvale Community Arena. This position will report to the Supervisor, Facilities.

Position Responsibilities

Reporting to the Facilities Supervisor, the position will provide assistance at the Elmvale Community Arena and be responsible for:


Responsible for arena ice making and maintenance duties, including but not limited to ice making, ice resurfacing, edges, scrapes, and refrigeration plant checks; Operate ice maintenance equipment (ice resurfacer and edger) and regular refrigeration plant checks; Operate and monitor facility operation systems and records readings and regular refrigeration plant checks; Assist with custodial duties, maintenance, security and public relations, specific to the Elmvale Community Arena; Operate cleaning equipment as required and assist with cleaning and disinfecting between user groups; Assist with the supervision of scheduled ice and hall rentals, special events, tournaments and programs; Ensure the security of the facility and that it is opened and closed at scheduled times; Responsible for preventative maintenance, equipment checks, annual maintenance and minor repair as assigned (i.e. minor plumbing, re-lamping of light fixtures, changing ceiling tiles, fix rubber floor, rink boards and gates, replace broken rink glass, check fire extinguisher, blade changes etc.) with minimal supervision; Maintain facility quality and safety by adhering to predetermined safe operating procedures; and Assist work crews as required.

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum completion of Secondary School education with related technical experience in facility operations, including ice making, ice resurfacing, and refrigeration; Ice-making experience and operating an ice resurfacer in a small arena environment is considered an asset; Ontario Recreation Facilities Associations - Basic Arena Refrigeration (BAR) is an asset; Responsible self-starter with good time management skills, you are able to organize and complete all tasks with minimal supervision and within given time frames; Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to deal with diverse individuals and confidence to address conflict situations with tact and diplomacy; Working knowledge of modern janitorial methods and equipment; Ability to perform general maintenance, manual labour and arena duties in all weather conditions; Ability to work independently and within a team environment; Good time management and record-keeping skills are necessary; Hold a valid Class 'G' driver's license in good standing; Must be available to workdays, afternoons, late evenings, weekends and statutory holidays; availability to work on a call-in, as needed basis is also required; Must hold a current Standard First Aid and CPR certificate with Automatic External Defibrillator Certification; and As a condition of employment, the successful candidate(s) must pass a Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Rate of Pay

Compensation for this position is $26.83 per hour (2025 rate) plus statutory holidays and vacation pay as per the Employment Standards Act.

Hours of Work

This position is a non-unionized on-call, casual position with variable work hours to a maximum of 24 hours per week. Must be available to work weekdays, afternoons, late evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays. This position will be for a fixed term until April 1, 2026.
