Coverdale Justice Society is a community-based organization dedicated to improving access to justice, promoting alternatives to traditional justice systems, and enhancing public safety and well-being, with a focus on primarily serving communities of criminalized women and gender- diverse individuals, including Indigenous and African Nova Scotian women, trans and queer people, and those affected by gender-based violence and poverty. Coverdale aims to support individuals impacted by historical and ongoing colonization, racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of marginalization and oppression. Our services include court-based, housing-based, and community-based support. Coverdale will be operating Coverdale Restorative Justice, an extension of Coverdale Justice Society that provides the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program (NSRJP) for youth and adults within the Halifax region.

About the Opportunity



Reporting to the Director, Coverdale Restorative Justice, the Casework Coordinator will play a pivotal role in the delivery of the Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program by coordinating, mentoring, and working closely with the team of RJ Caseworkers. The Casework Coordinator will also partner, on an ongoing basis, with referral sources, community partners, and the Director to ensure a responsive, effective, and inclusive restorative justice pathway in Halifax that reduces cycles of harm and injustice and supports healthy, safe, and strong communities.

In this role, you will draw on expertise in front-line service provision, case management, and/or program facilitation, as well as a proven ability to lead by example and inspire others through action, to set and uphold a standard of excellence for restorative justice caseworkers. Overall, we are seeking a forward-thinking, engaging, and organized individual who is energized by the opportunity to mentor and motivate a team to make a difference in the lives of others. Core Responsibilities



Casework management

: Oversee and coordinate the organization's restorative justice casework by providing active guidance, mentorship, and practice support to a team of caseworkers tasked with supporting over 450 NSRJP referrals annually. Work closely with caseworkers over the course of the restorative justice process, ensuring restorative justice principles inform participant meetings, mapping and design, circle facilitation, and support in successful process completion.

Caseload coordination:

In partnership with the Director, assess and assign all NSRJP referrals with consideration of staff capacity, skills, community connections, and other needs. Participate actively as a member of the HRM Lead Team, including by attending weekly triage meetings (for adult referrals), building effective working relationships with Community Corrections partners, and assessing appropriateness of referrals.

Justice sector collaboration:

Work closely with NSRJP referral sources (police, Public Prosecution Service, judiciary, Correctional Services, and victim-serving agencies) and other justice system actors (Nova Scotia Legal Aid, private defence counsel, etc.) to uphold and strengthen the restorative justice pathway in the Halifax region. This includes maintaining open communication with referral sources in support of restorative justice referrals and processes, attending court on a weekly basis, facilitating case conferences with relevant partners and the judiciary (when appropriate), and participating in joint efforts with justice partners, such as the HRM Youth Court Working Group.

Community leadership:

Represent Coverdale Restorative Justice with external partners and in the community, including through participation in inter-agency groups, networks, and other tables, and by providing presentations, training, and workshops. Foster and maintain relationships of trust with community organizations and services in all HRM communities to support the design of inclusive and responsive RJ processes and to ensure referrals to supports and programming that meet participant needs.

Justice transformation:

Work collaboratively with justice system actors, community-based partners, and other experts to champion a restorative approach to justice, as well as other initiatives focused on justice transformation, both in the Halifax region and across Nova Scotia.

Key Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies



Ability to engage, motivate, and support a team in delivering a high standard of work in a high-stress, fast-paced, and emotionally- and mentally-taxing environment. Proven capabilities in case management (including case note and report writing), navigating systems and supports, and delivering human/client-centred programming. Capable of meaningfully integrating a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and relational approach across all aspects of work, as well as demonstrated aptitude for working with people with diverse and overlapping needs. Strong collaboration, community engagement, and partnership development skills. Theoretical and practical understanding of restorative justice, restorative approaches, and justice transformation, as well as associated initiatives. Knowledge of social supports and services, community-based resources and programs, and the non-profit sector in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Education and Experience



A post-secondary degree in a relevant social sciences or humanities discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in case management, program delivery, and/or front-line service delivery. Demonstrated ability to delegate tasks, maintain organization, manage competing priorities, problem solve, and make effective decisions under pressure. Experience leading a program and/or managing, mentoring, or coaching staff, volunteers, or participants. Proven track record in establishing effective working relationships with diverse populations, justice system actors, government agencies, and/or community organizations. Working knowledge of and experience in applying anti-oppressive, human-centered, and trauma-informed practices, including in working with historically, persistently, or systemically marginalized groups.

Employment and Working Conditions



This position is subject to the personnel policies of Coverdale Justice Society. Flexibility to travel throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality and greater Nova Scotia, as required. The position requires access to a private vehicle or another reliable form of transportation.
