Role and Objectives:
The Carpenter, under the direction of the Panel Line Supervisor, is responsible for building, restoring and/or installing structural woodwork and related materials. This position requires knowledge of the heavy construction industry. Specifically, the practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety associated with this industry. The Carpenter must be proficient at the following tasks: rigging CLT panels and glulam beams, installing timber fasteners and bolts, placing windows and doors, stain-grade trim work, layout, reading blueprints, and must possess mathematical and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates.
Responsibilities:
Fabrication & Carpentry Execution
Assist with the creation of blueprints, fabrication layouts, and manufacturing specifications.
Perform rigging activities involving CLT and glulam beams using cranes and forklifts.
Operate and maintain power tools and carpentry equipment (e.g., drills, saws, routers).
Complete framing tasks including doors, windows, and structural connections.
Install building materials such as insulation and membranes to design specifications.
Confirm accuracy and structural alignment using measurement tools such as levels and plumb bobs.
May support fabrication of temporary or supporting structures (e.g., trestles, bridges, towers).
Handle and transport job materials safely to support workflow and task completion.
Assist with minor duties related to other trades when certifications are not required and within competency limits.
Quality, Planning & Documentation
Maintain accurate daily logs of completed tasks and material use.
Contribute to and support the Quality Control System by ensuring compliance with specifications.
Prepare estimates for work orders and request materials necessary to complete tasks.
Maintain an adequate supply of materials to support preventative maintenance activities.
Read, interpret, and communicate details from construction drawings, shop drawings, and as-builts to ensure correct execution.
Provide input and recommendations on improvement opportunities for fabrication efficiency and quality.
Safety, Leadership & Collaboration
Follow and reinforce Kalesnikoff's health and safety standards, ensuring adherence by apprentices and peers.
Set up and dismantle scaffolding safely as required.
Guide and support apprentices to ensure skill development and correct task performance.
Demonstrate respect for direction given and maintain positive working relationships.
Adapt to changing priorities, work environments, and production needs.
Understand and comply with all company policies and procedures.
Perform other related duties as requested or required.
Qualifications:
Education
Current Journeyman's Carpenter's Certificate is considered an asset
High school diploma or General Equivalent Diploma (GED).
Experience
Three (3) years of experience as a Carpenter.
Two (2) years of experience working in heavy construction.
Currently working in the trade.
Skills & Knowledge
Knowledge of safe operation of carpentry tools.
Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures.
Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
Time management skills.
Ability to read building specifications, blueprints, and as-builds.
Ability to draw appropriate sketches to communicate details to team members, and others.
Mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material and labour estimates.
Receptive to change - can adapt to changing circumstances.
Makes suggestions for improvement.
Proactive in ensuring job knowledge is current.
Compensation Package:
Salary: $31.42 - $32.45 per hour (dependent on experience)
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm.
