This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).


In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $92,312 - $126,931. This position has an initial appointment of 1 year plus 1 day with a strong possibility of extension.

Location -

This position offers a flexible work arrangement, allowing for a combination of remote and/or in-office work based on work preferences. We welcome applicants from across Alberta. In the event that you need to work on-site, you may have the flexibility to attend either the Edmonton or Calgary offices based on your location and convenience. Preference will be discussed during the recruitment process.

Position Summary




Reporting to the ABMI's Executive Director, the Caribou Ecology Manager is responsible for implementing the mandate and strategic direction for the ABMI with respect to caribou conservation and research. The Manager for Caribou Ecology is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and management of ABMI's caribou and other wildlife science vision to support environmental management throughout Alberta and beyond. This includes leading program design, data analysis, and reporting in active collaboration with multiple partners, including the broader academic community, provincial and federal governments, environmental non-government organizations, Indigenous communities, and industry representatives from the natural resource sector.

Its work positions the university at the forefront of technological, environmental, and scientific advancement.
1. Management

Provides financial oversight and control of Caribou research. This includes financial reporting and budget forecasting and establishing a funding allocation process for monitoring and research. Determines resources (fiscal and human) and undertakes work planning for Caribou research. This includes making decisions on the acquisition of resources and manages issues related to allocation of resources (including human resources and space). Recruits, on boards and manages up to approximately 5 staff. Contributes to the compilation of grant applications, scientific and financial reports, and ensures timelines/deliverables are met. Evaluates and makes appropriate changes to the work of Caribou research. Oversees project evaluation and closure activities in collaboration with coordinators and project managers. Fosters new partnerships at national and international tables including government, industry, and academia.

2. Research

Leads the development of Caribou research applications and serves as ABMI's principal contact within the national and international research community. Working with the ABMI Management Team, plans and oversees the development of the research program including the design and implementation of solutions to operational challenges. Makes continuous improvements to Caribou research services, programs or operations to increase performance and deliver results. Contributes to the compilation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications. Participates on examining and supervisory committees, and co-supervises graduate student research in collaboration with the U of A and other external research organizations.

3. Leadership

Establishes clear performance expectations with staff, other centres in the ABMI, and with partners and stakeholders. Leads a diverse group of support staff including quantitative scientists, and technicians. Creates an environment where diverse ideas, perspectives and achievements are recognized, rewarded and celebrated. Prepares presentations for the ABMI Board, Members, stakeholders and scientific community, and participates in and/or helps with coordination of events/workshops.

4. Policy implementation

Works with other program areas in the ABMI to create and implement policy applications. Ensures the proper application of University of Alberta Policies and Procedures within the areas (e.g., research administration, risk management, etc.). M.Sc. in Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Statistics, Computer Sciences or Natural Resource Management, or related discipline. Ph.D. degree is preferred. Minimum 5 years of project management experience on a diverse set of biodiversity projects, including leadership, risk and task management, planning and organization. Minimum 5 years of experience in ecological research and management. Experience in avian ecology and/or bioacoustics is strongly preferred. Strong background in statistics and application in biodiversity management. Proven ability to attract and manage funding resources. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage technical and scientific teams. Excellent communication and writing skills. Team-oriented with excellent relationship-building skills. Keen interest in finding solutions for sustainable natural resource management and related public policies. Complete proficiency in English (written and spoken). Clear understanding of the statutory and policy environment in Canada as it relates to biodiversity monitoring and assessment. Experience with contract management. Experience with financial management and administration of large budgets.
