JOB SUMMARY
The Captain, reporting to the Chief Officers, provides leadership and supervision of the on-shift team, ensuring operational readiness of personnel, apparatus, and equipment. This role oversees emergency and non-emergency response, and are responsible for crew training, fire prevention, public education, and supporting inter-agency collaboration. In the absence of Chief Officers, the Captain assumes leadership of departmental operations. This role plays a vital part in protecting the community through strong leadership, operational excellence, and a commitment to safety.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Emergency Response and Incident Management - respond to emergency scenes and provide leadership as directed. Ensure safe resolution of incidents. Direct and coordinate fire crews during emergency incidents. Utilize the Incident Command System (ICS) during all activities. Demonstrate and enforce safe work practices at all emergency and non-emergency worksites. Facilitate the return of incident scenes to safe conditions.
Equipment, Apparatus, and Safety - drive and operate motor-driven firefighting equipment. Conduct and ensure compliance with pre-response, response, and post-incident apparatus, and equipment inspections. Report any loss or damage to apparatus or equipment. Maintain accountability for all equipment inventory during assigned shifts. Report all work-related injuries, incidents, and damage to fire department assets.
Leadership and Team Development - provide constructive leadership and mentorship to firefighters. Deliver training programs for junior officers and firefighters. Promote teamwork and collaboration in both emergency and non-emergency settings. Participate in achieving team objectives and organizational goals.
Community Engagement and Education - engage with the public in a professional manner. Participate in fire prevention initiatives, public education, school programs, and the Home Inspection Program. Represent the department on committees as assigned or appointed.
Professional Conduct and Administrative Duties - maintain familiarity with fire department and Nation procedures, rules, and regulations. Be punctual for all shifts, meetings, and assignments. Perform other related duties as required by supervising officers.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
Desired Certifications, Knowledge, and Experience:
o NFPA 1001 Level I & II
o NFPA 472 Awareness and Operations
o NFPA 1002 Apparatus Operator
o NFPA 1021 Level I & II
o NFPA 1041 Level I
o NFPA 1051 Wildland Firefighter
o ICS 100 & 200
o Standard First Aid, CPR Level "C," and AED certification.
o WHMIS, TOG, H2S Alive, Flag Person, and Defensive Driving certifications
o Principles of Fire Behaviour and Wildland Fire Safety on the Fireline.
o Knowledge of safe work procedures, and ergonomic work practices.
o Experience working with First Nations communities.
Personal Attributes:
o Ability to operate computers and standard software programs.
o Strong communication skills, and ability to provide accurate reports.
General Employment Requirements:
o Alberta Class 3 (or higher) Driver's License with Air Brake "Q" endorsement.
o Firefighter Physical Capability Test.
o Criminal Record Check, and Vulnerable Sector Check.
o Oath of Confidentiality.
o Familiarity with the Tsuut'ina Nation land base and adjacent areas.
