Apply today to join our team!As a Canine Detection Specialist with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Be responsible for the care, maintenance and wellbeing of an assigned biological scent detection dog and for executing screenings of healthcare facilities to detect and report on reservoirs of target pathogens.
  • Be assigned a biological scent detection canine from the program.
  • House and transport their canine partner safely and securely, and ensure the well being of their assigned canine as part of the program\xe2\x80\x99s standard procedures.

  • Experience working with or training with dogs is strongly preferred, but not required.
  • Must complete the Canine Scent Detection training program at Vancouver Coastal Health, and be certified as a Canine Detection Specialist effective within the first three (3) months of employment as a Canine Detection Specialist.
  • Experience in a clinical/healthcare setting including clinical roles, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Local area travel requires the use of a vehicle that can safely and securely transport the assigned dog to and from work. Must be physically able to assist the canine into the vehicle, while keeping balance when handling the canine.
  • The CDS must be able to house their assigned canine safely and securely, as part of the program\xe2\x80\x99s standard procedures.
Knowledge & Abilities
  • Possesses a strong knowledge of how odor works, along with a solid understanding of canine communication.
  • Demonstrates ability and achievement in maintaining a high level of proficiency as a CDS.
  • Demonstrates ability and aptitude to work in a medical environment.
  • Demonstrates ability and aptitude to perform multiple tasks simultaneously (e.g. watching/interpreting canine communication, identifying hazards, communicating with unit staff and/or members of the public).
  • Possesses excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide appropriate accommodation for the canine.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
  • Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Attentive to detail and trained to notice subtleties, including canine signals and atypical behaviors.
  • Demonstrates ability to use discretion.
  • Works effectively under time pressure to meet deadlines, balance work priorities and resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Possesses the ability to be flexible in their daily work tasks and adapt readily to change.
