Project Description:

The Promoting and Protecting Women's and Girls' Rights (EmpowerHER) project seeks to advance gender equality and reduce sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Kiribati, Solomon Islands, and Tonga, with a particular focus on Indigenous women and girls.

EmpowerHER strengthens local and national efforts to prevent and respond to SGBV by enhancing the capacity of civil society, communities, and governments to deliver inclusive, survivor-centred services and challenge harmful gender norms. The project will improve access to SGBV services in both urban and remote island settings, support legal and policy implementation, and amplify women's and girls' voices in advocating for their rights.

This three-year initiative (March 2025-March 2028) is led by Alinea International in partnership with the Kiribati Family Health Association (KFHA), Solomon Islands Planned Parenthood Association (SIPPA), and the Talitha Project in Tonga. It aligns with national SGBV policies and contributes to inclusive governance and human rights protection in the Pacific.

About the work / The role

This is a dynamic opportunity for students or graduates passionate about gender equality, international development, and human rights. Volunteers will gain hands-on experience in research, communications, program design, and monitoring in support of a high-impact regional initiative.

You will contribute directly to the project's mission of advancing gender equality, preventing SGBV, and promoting inclusive governance by supporting the EmpowerHER technical and field teams.

We are interested in volunteers with interest in the following areas:

Research and Knowledge Development:

Draft concise evidence briefs and literature reviews on best practices in SGBV prevention, youth engagement, male engagement and survivor-centred and trauma-informed approaches. Support gender and social inclusion research, including reviews of national SGBV policies and community-based practices in the Pacific.

Capacity Building and Training:

Assist in developing training resources, facilitator guides, and adult learning tools for community partners. Support the design of inclusive, participatory learning materials that strengthen the capacity of civil society and youth groups.

Communications and Outreach:

Contribute to social media campaigns, poster content, and infographic design to highlight the voices of women and youth leaders. Help document project stories of change and success across the three countries.

Technical and Strategic Support:

Contribute to desk research and knowledge products on engaging men and boys, youth participation, and survivor-centred approaches to SGBV prevention. Support development of advocacy briefs, communication materials, and policy summaries for use by EmpowerHER partners and campaigns. Assist in preparing internal learning materials and presentations that strengthen project coordination, localization, and visibility.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

Support data collection and analysis on gender equality and SGBV indicators. Assist in preparing reports and visual summaries to track project outcomes.

Required Qualifications

Current University students: Minimum 2 years completed of post secondary study; currently enrolled in a university program. Graduates or working professionals: Completed undergraduate degree and/or professional experience in a related field.
