Common Place Cafe Server Role:

Common Place Cafe is looking for staff member to join the team in assisting the Manager in all duties related to the smooth and efficient operation of the cafe. If you have food industry experience, work well on a team, and have a positive attitude, this could be the job for you!

We are looking for a Server who is passionate about food and service, and thoroughly enjoys creating excellent experiences for our customers. You have a friendly, outgoing disposition, and previous experience working as a Server in a bustling, fast-paced restaurant setting. You will play an integral role in ensuring our customers have exceptional dining experiences.

This is a part-time (25-30 hrs/week) position, requiring availability to work on a rotating schedule Monday through Saturday. General cafe operating hours are 7 AM - 2 PM. The Cafe Server will be directly responsible to the Cafe Manager or Kitchen Supervisor.

The Common Place Cafe is a not-for profit social enterprise initiative of Mennonite Central Committee BC seeking to raise monies and expose customers to the domestic and international work of MCC. It has a 54-seat capacity inside with an additional 40 patio seats available during summer season. The goal is to help preserve and enhance our reputation so we can expand our clientele.

Duties:

As directed by the Cafe Manager:

Warmly greet & seat customers

Assist with breakfast and lunch service preparation, using designated food safe standards

Assist in kitchen clean-up, as needed, ensuring that proper food safe standards are maintained.

Deliver quality customer service:

Act on customer requests with a sense of urgency and friendliness (taking and serving orders in a timely fashion, answering any questions, highlighting daily features, calling in Manager as needed), Ensuring the dining area is clean and inviting (setting up and cleaning tables) Using computerized system tabulating food orders and collecting payments from customers.
Highlight monthly featured local MCC program areas to customers, answering or directing questions as appropriate.

Qualifications:

Minimum High School Certification required.

Good (oral and written) communication skills.

Strong team player with positive attitude and orientation to service.

Strong interpersonal skills, particularly relating to volunteers and Cafe clientele base.

Ability to operate a POS machine.

Demonstrated multi-tasking and organizational ability.

Ability to stand for extended hours.

Ability to work in a fast paced, multitasking environment with little supervision.

Ability to safely work with kitchen equipment.

Valid Food Safe Certificate - Level 1 required (or ability to obtain within first two months).

Satisfactory criminal record check.
