WaterBridge Ferries is a private-owned ferry operator company based in Nakusp, British Columbia, Canada. As contractors to the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, we are responsible for the safe ferry passage of people in the communities surrounding the Arrow Lakes in BC. Our ferry crews are Transport Canada trained and certified. We pride ourselves on the impact we make on the local economies in which we operate.

Under the direction of the Head Ferry Operator, the Ferry Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a passenger ferry as required under Transport Canada Marine Regulations. This position is offered as an auxiliary position and is considered "as and when required" with no guarantee of hours. This position is best suited for those who currently live in, or are in the process of relocating to, anywhere in the vicinity of Nakusp BC, Canada. Travel to the point of assembly is at your own cost.
Key Accountabilities:
Instructs drivers and guides vehicles onto ferry and ensures compliance with safety regulations
Operates and performs field maintenance for a Cable Ferry, ferry landings, machinery, equipment, buildings and safety equipment.
Carries out assigned planned maintenance and repair tasks
Operates ferry machinery and equipment with the safety and comfort of passengers as a major consideration
Carries out emergency repairs, if necessary
Reports unsafe water or environmental conditions and takes appropriate action such as removing debris from water or waiting until conditions change, monitor river conditions, levels and water flow
Conducts inspections of machinery and ancillary equipment for deteriorating performance and appearance
Reports safety concerns, defects, and repairs needed
Maintains and cleans equipment, buildings and ferry areas
Assists in refit work
Removes snow and ice from ferry, ferry towers and passenger pathways
Ensure the ferry is clean and ready for the next shift's operation
Maintains stock of supplies and fuel for ferry
Participates in safety drills including performing evacuation procedures and using emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, lifeboats and personal flotation devices
Checks condition and certification date of safety and emergency equipment
Maintains log of daily ferry operation including weather conditions, incidents, repairs, fuel consumption and time sheets
Responds to enquiries and provides information to customers regarding changes in ferry services
Signs delivery slips for fuel and goods received
Performs other related duties
Qualifications/Skills/Experience:
Transport Canada STCW Basic Safety and Marine First Aid training required. The company may sponsor training. The successful candidate must be able to travel for schooling.
Must provide a valid Marine Medical Certificate prior to start date
Must hold a valid BC Driver's License - Class 5
Minimum Grade 10 completion required
Must be physically able, alone without assistance, to execute safety drills including performing evacuation procedures and using emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers and hoses, lifeboats and personal flotation devices
Ability to interact effectively, professionally and courteously with coworkers and the public
Is a team player with an approachable demeanor
Comfortable working with computer applications including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
Good written and oral communication skills a must
Demonstrated ability to respond to emergency situations calmly, effectively and efficiently
Working knowledge of marine vessels and ferry systems an asset
Working Conditions
This is a
work-alone position
, and you must be comfortable working with little supervision.
Must be comfortable working in extreme weather conditions, and at times, in confined spaces.
Shifts length varies from4 hrs - 7.5 hours
