Position Summary:
Reporting to the Manager, Decision Support, the
Business Intelligence (BI) Developer - Decision Support
is a technically-minded professional who supports the organization by transforming complex healthcare data into actionable insights. Key components of the job include but not limited to designing and implementing data models, conducting data analysis, requirements gathering, database querying/analysis, performance indicator development/automation, ad-hoc reporting builds and end-user engagement and communication. The BI Developer - Decision Support along with partners in the Decision Support and Information Technology teams, work collaboratively to support clinical programs to action and interpret data to drive business decisions and efficiencies.
Project Description
St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) and Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) are embarking on an exciting digital transformation project to implement Epic's health information system (HIS) at JBH.
In this partnership, JBH will adopt SJHH's version of Epic's health information system (HIS), which is branded Dovetale. Both organizations will support the shared instance of Dovetale following the project's implementation. The project goals are to enable safer patient care, empower healthcare providers and staff, make care more efficient, and improve the overall patient experience at JBH.
Travel Requirements
The successful candidate will be part of an Integrated Team that will work closely with subject matter experts and leadership at JBH, SJHH, and Epic to carry out the implementation and would be active participants in joint and local committees. While remote work is supported, you will be required to travel to SJHH and JBH locations regularly to complete project activities. For successful candidates hired without Epic certification, you must hold valid travel documentation as you will be expected to travel to the United States to complete your certification requirements in September to October and/or whenever required.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in healthcare data analysis, and data modelling techniques with a strong understanding of healthcare systems, regulations, and data governance.
Responsibilities
Develop, produce, and analyze reports to support decision making, planning, impact/market share analysis, and proposals.
Conduct design and code reviews of developed solutions for quality assurance.
Understand and translate business needs into data models supporting long term solutions.
Assist with the development of training materials for the training of reporting consumers.
Provide technical guidance to various cross-functional BI stakeholders.
Design, develop report layout, metric and analyses of intermediate to advanced complexity and determine best way to offer data to end users and stakeholders.
Manage the maintenance, improvement, and presentation of program reports, scorecards and dashboards, performance indicators and ad-hoc reports for various users and user groups within the organization.
Extract, analyze and condense complex and varied data to provide meaningful and useful findings.
Responsible for data extraction and transformation processes to integrate new data sources (ETLs).
Monitor and maintain BI environment from data extraction to report distribution.
Continuously look for opportunities to automate data extraction, transformation and reporting processes to reduce manual work and improve efficiency.
Create and maintain documentation to build a repository of key configuration decisions and associated builds.
Collaborate with team members and while prioritizing tasks with guidance from the manager, to develop BI solutions in a proficient and timely manner, consistent with estimates created during design.
Keep abreast of current advances in the fields of Health, Business Intelligence and Information Management.
Qualifications:
Effective and independent self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills, data and statistical acumen, and ability to work with an integrated team of various disciplines.
Related undergraduate degree; Master's degree considered an asset (Computer Science/Health Information Management).
Experience with healthcare data standards and systems (eg. Coding, OHRS, Meditech, EPIC, etc.).
Strong computer knowledge and skills with proficiency in decision support tools and applications, databases, designing and generating reports and knowledge of business intelligence tools with the ability to learn new software and systems.
Strong understanding of relational database structure and design.
Strong proficiency in data modelling techniques, statistical analysis and data visualization.
Minimum of 3 years 'experience in developing and managing BI solutions using Microsoft Power BI or similar reporting tools is required.
Minimum of 3 years' experience in SQL data query language is required.
Experience with SQL server, including writing complex queries, stored procedures and performing tuning for data retrieval.
Experience with ETL processes for data extraction, transformation and loading.
Demonstrated proficiency working with Microsoft Enterprise applications (i.e.: Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, OneNote) is required.
Previous experience working with a modernized HIS and/or EPIC certification is an asset.
Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to build and maintain strategic relations and partnerships with diverse health service providers.
Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to clearly define projects, objectives, goals, assignments, etc.
