Under the direction of the Headstart Coordinator, the Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of children to and from the Headstart program as needed. This role involves operating the school bus in compliance with all traffic rules and regulations, as well as adhering to Stoney Health Services (SHS) and Stoney Tribal Administration (STA) Employment regulations. The Driver will also perform other related duties as required to support the program and ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers. This is a part-time position with a split shift.
DRIVER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Safely transport children to and from the Head Start Program according to assigned bus routes and schedules.
Conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection of the school bus before each use.
Keep exterior mirrors clean and properly adjusted at all times.
Know, recognize, and obey all road signs and signals.
Monitor children and remain vigilant for warning signs at all stops.
Continuously scan all mirrors before loading and unloading children.
Maintain planned routes and schedules, reporting any hazards encountered along the way.
Exercise effective defensive driving skills, demonstrating self-control, alertness, foresight, and good judgment.
Remain alert to hazards, including poor weather conditions, other vehicles, road conditions, and trains at railroad crossings.
Fuel the van and check and add oil, water, transmission fluid, and report any maintenance or repair issues.
Prepares maintenance request for repairs.
Completes all reports on bus maintenance, and any other reports required by the Head Start Program Coordinator.
Wash the exterior and clean the interior of the vehicle, including windows, roof hatch, seats, and floor, for weekly inspections.
EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working with young children.
Current CPR and First Aid certification.
Knowledge and interest in Stoney Nakoda language and culture.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
Positive and caring attitude towards children.
Creative, patient, reliable, and flexible.
Ability to model self-care and effective behavior.
Open to new ideas and willing to adapt.
Can work independently in a challenging environment.
Basic computer skills (internet, email, word processing) preferred.
Willingness to attend required Alberta Certification training.
