POSITION SUMMARY:



The Bus Driver is primarily responsible for the efficient and safe operation and basic maintenance of the bus operated by the Head Start Program. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for providing activity support to the Teaching Assistant and ECE Team Leader. The Bus Driver shall ensure that all activities are undertaken in a manner that is consistent with, and complementary to, the Vision Statement, the Principles and Values and the policies and procedures of the Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Operate the Head Start bus in a safe, efficient and controlled manner including the pick up and drop off of children and/or parents participating in the Program, in accordance with established daily operating schedules, and scheduled field trips or extra-curricular activities. Plan and submit bus route(s) and schedules, including any necessary changes to the previously implemented bus route(s) and schedule(s) that may occur throughout the year, to the ECE Team Leader/PSW for approval and distribution to participants. Conduct a daily inspection of the bus to ensure that all operating systems and safety features are functional, perform weekly checks of fuel and fluid levels, ensure that the interior and exterior of the bus are maintained in a clean and safe manner, ensure that oil changes, lubrication, minor maintenance and the semi-annual inspection of all operating systems and safety features is undertaken as required. Conduct Developmental Profiles relative to the physical, spiritual, social / emotional and language / cognitive development of each child within the Program, monitor and assess the individual progress achieved by the child on an ongoing basis, and provide regular information, feedback and support to the parent(s). Observe, document and provide positive corrective direction regarding the conduct of children while at the Aboriginal Centre, during field trips and while on the bus, for the purpose of assessing overall behavior and development. Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:



Possession of a valid Province of Manitoba Class 4 Driver's License, with no more than four (4) demerit points. Classification as a Child Care Assistant by the Child Care Education Program Approval Committee, Manitoba Education and Training and completion of course(s) related to early childhood education (optional). Demonstrated experience in operating a bus with a capacity of between twenty and thirty-five passengers, combined with the successful completion the Defensive Driving Course as offered by the Manitoba Safety Council. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with, and relate to, children and parents participating in the Head Start Program. The ability to communicate in an Aboriginal language(s) and/or previous exposure to Aboriginal communities and cultures would be a definite asset Demonstrated capacity to function effectively in a working team environment.
