Job Description

Reporting to the Manager - Engineering for Sustainable Development (the "Manager"), the Building Science Engineer will provide subject matter expertise for technical and engineering planning for Sheridan\'s built environment, buildings, infrastructure, systems and general campus to realize net-zero targets for energy, water, and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as variety of circular-economy objectives. The Building Science Engineer will contribute to the development of building science scope for building retrofits, infrastructure replacement, capital renewal, and campus development projects, provide input to institutional policies, procedures, and practices to ensure continuous improvement, optimization, and ongoing commissioning of building systems. As a subject matter expert, the incumbent provides support and technical guidance on facility operations, capital projects, and renovations. The Building Science Engineer collaborates with the Engineering for Sustainable Development team to ensure their work aligns with the broader goals of the Facilities and Sustainable Infrastructure team. The incumbent will provide mentorship to co-op students.

What You\'ll be Doing

  • Performing system analyses at building and district energy-levels, analyzing functional and performance requirements, preparing technical specifications, and performing engineering calculations to ensure alignment with institutional net-zero goals;
  • Defining building science scope for building retrofits, infrastructure replacement, capital renewal, and campus development projects, from conceptual design through formal scope/budget, assisting in successful tendering and procurement, and verifying the quality and completeness of construction, acting as Sheridan\'s design lead with consulting engineers;
  • Researching, preparing memos, and making recommendations on relevant innovative technologies, operating concepts, and practices that will advance sustainability and net-zero goals;
  • Mentoring junior team members and educating Facilities and Sustainable Infrastructure (FSI) colleagues on subject matter expertise;
  • Providing input to engineering, operational, and capital budget processes and assisting in the compilation of project status reports;
  • Performing other related duties, as assigned.

The successful candidate will also meet the following requirements:
  • 4-year Engineering degree in Building Science, Architectural, Structural or closely related field
  • Professional Engineer Certification
  • 5 years demonstrated experience in high-performance building performance engineering, including design, specification, and inspection of energy efficient designs and Passive House principles, curtain wall systems, roofing, insulation, fenestration, and material interactions and compatibilities (equivalency to be considered)
  • Working knowledge of various American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards (36, 90.1, 62.1, etc.) and energy requirements in building codes and desire to master local and national energy codes
  • Experience on new construction or major renovation projects with important sustainability and energy efficiency objectives such as LEED, Zero Carbon Building Standard, or Passive House will be considered an asset
