Under the general direction of the Maintenance Chief Engineer, the Maintenance Engineer plays a key role in ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of building systems and infrastructure. This position contributes to the overall mission of Okanagan College by providing vital maintenance services that uphold the safety, comfort, and functionality of campus facilities. The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing a variety of mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems, and for conducting preventative maintenance to ensure operational efficiency and compliance with codes and standards.




Functions and Duties


Operates, maintains, and repairs campus mechanical systems including boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, air compressors, and pumps. Performs preventative maintenance and organizes tasks to optimize system performance and extend equipment life. Maintains and repairs electrical systems and equipment; reports major electrical issues to the Manager, Plant Services & Operations. Conducts maintenance & repair on plumbing, irrigation, building hardware, and other mechanical infrastructure. Investigates and resolves minor complaints and escalate problems to the Maintenance Chief Engineer. Any major problems get reported to Manager, Plant Services & Operations. Maintains accurate records including logbooks, water treatment logs, inventory, and fire/life safety documentation. Ensures all maintenance work is performed in compliance with relevant codes and safety regulations. Acts as a liaison between the Penticton Campus and Facilities Management, providing input and recommendations regarding facility operations. Provides input and assistance to Campus Administration and JOSH committee Supports all campuses and is expected to travel as needed Performs other duties and assists with special projects as assigned.




Education and Experience


Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Journeyman Trades Qualification or recognized training in power engineering, refrigeration, electrical, or plumbing, as recognized by the Province of British Columbia. Over 4 years and up to 6 years of progressively related experience. A 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate is preferred. HVAC experience in building a maintenance environment is considered an asset. A combination of education and experience may be considered.



Skills and Abilities


Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain building systems and related equipment. Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, particularly related to HVAC and mechanical systems. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. Strong planning and organizational abilities. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Working knowledge of computerized building management systems. Safe and efficient work practices. Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships and exercise courtesy, tact, and discretion. Strong team collaboration and customer service orientation. Adaptability and openness to change. Knowledge of green technologies and energy efficiency practices is an asset. Comfortable working in physically demanding environments, including confined spaces and at heights.
