Building Inspector / Municipal Compliance Officer

Job Description

The Building Inspector / Municipal Compliance Officer, under the direction of the Chief Building Official, ensures compliance with the Ontario Building Code and municipal by-laws through plan reviews, inspections, and enforcement. The role also supports fire prevention, public education, and may provide services to partner municipalities under shared agreements.

Position Requirements and Qualifications



Post-secondary education in Architecture, Construction, Enforcement, or related field. Qualified under the Ontario Building Code Act with a valid BCIN; completed exams in General Legal/Process, House, Small Buildings, Plumbing, HVAC, and (preferably) Building Structural. CBCO designation an asset. Certification or experience in by-law enforcement/property standards (MLEOA or OAPSO considered an asset). Valid Class "G" Ontario driver's license. 2-5 years of experience in building inspections, plan review, or by-law. Proficient in Microsoft Office and permitting software; GIS knowledge an asset. Strong communication, time management, and conflict resolution skills. Physically able to work outdoors and on active construction sites in various conditions.

Position Description



Review permit applications, architectural plans, and engineering drawings. Conduct site inspections at various construction stages to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code (OBC). Enforce property standards, zoning, and related by-laws. Issue compliance orders, stop work notices, and attend court or tribunal hearings when necessary. Support the Fire Department with fire prevention inspections, life safety reviews, and public education. Provide by-law and building inspection services to neighboring municipalities under shared agreements. Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and attend legal proceedings as needed. Uphold the highest ethical standards per the Code of Conduct for Building Officials.

Safety Compliance



Adhere to all safety regulations, policies, and best practices. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Participate in regular safety training sessions.

The successful candidate will be required to provide the following



Criminal Background Reference Check. Submit certified original copies of diploma/certificates and other documentation as requested. Copy of driver's license.

Compensation



Permanent, full-time position (35 hours per week) Compensation commensurate with qualifications and experience Includes a comprehensive benefits package and OMERS pension plan
