This is complex inspection and regulatory work involving assisting a supervisor in directing the activities of a small group of technical inspectors engaged in the inspection of all types of buildings during construction, repair and alteration and enforcement of various municipal by-laws, codes and regulations. An incumbent assists a supervisor in directing the activities of the Building Inspection Section; reviews daily work assignments; coordinates work schedules; performs periodic check inspections to ensure that assignments are carried out in accordance with departmental standards and procedures; inspects commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential projects during construction, alteration or repair to ensure conformity with approved plans and compliance with applicable sections of by-laws, Acts, codes, standards and regulations; conducts inspections of a problematic or difficult nature; assists other inspectors with complex inspections and problems and with matters relating to enforcement and interpretation of by-laws and codes; participates in the drafting of by-law amendments and development and implementation of new and/or revised departmental policies and procedures; explains and interprets applicable policies, procedures, standards, by-laws, regulations and codes; provides advice and discusses problems, unusual projects and preliminary development proposals with architects, engineers, contractors, owners, municipal staff and various other internal and external contacts. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by completion of a recognized carpentry trade apprenticeship or graduation from an institute of technology with a diploma in Building Technology, plus considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the standards, codes, regulations and by-laws governing the work performed; the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction, repair and alteration of all types of buildings. Ability to assist a supervisor in directing the activities of the Building Inspection Section and with the provision of guidance, advice and training to other inspectors; read, understand and interpret plans and specifications; recognize technical requirements and suggest and enforce changes or corrections as required; enforce codes, regulations and by-laws firmly, tactfully and with full authority and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other municipal staff, architects, tradesmen, contractors, engineers and various other internal and external contacts. A Certification from the Building Officials Association of BC (BOABC) Level 3 and a valid Driver\'s Licence for the Province of British Columbia is required.
