The Broadcast Business Manager is primarily responsible for obtaining the necessary legal clearances (ASC, Telecaster & Kids) for all broadcast commercials, ensuring all air dates are met and paying performer/music residuals in a timely fashion. Reporting Relationships: This position reports directly to VP, Co Production Directors. Responsibilities:
  • Issue Digital/Radio/TV commercial ID codes and provide slate sheets to producers.
  • Add commercial codes, job# and correct titles to TV & Radio scripts before submitting for legal clearances.
  • Submit TV/Radio scripts and final spots for all necessary legal clearances and notify client service of any approvals/issues.
  • Notify media/AOR if buy will be affected by any clearance restrictions (i.e. French -K or -KK kids programming)
  • Provide clear and concise talent/music residual quotes for TV/Radio/Digital usage to client service and producers.
  • Generate talent/music residual estimates and distribute to client service and finance. Revise estimates, when required. Reconcile all costs and do Final Actual estimate when ready to close.
  • Manage closed captioning of final TV and Digital spots via the distribution house.
  • Manage distribution of final Radio and TV spots via the distribution house.
  • Traffic Radio/TV campaigns to Starcom/AOR at least 1wk in advance of air date (more time is needed if air date falls on a holiday) and co-ordinate with them on deadlines and ETA of final creative.
  • Obtain station list from Starcom/AOR and report talent/music usage to talent payment house and approve corresponding residual invoices.
  • Create PO’s as needed to send out to vendors and approve invoices against them.
  • Continuing knowledge on all unions (ACTRA/UDA/CFM/AFM/SAG) and help clarify any issues for client service/producers.
  • Maintain friendly/professional relationships with all union representation and outside vendors.
  • Keep track of all talent/music residual cycles and renew when needed (i.e. 2nd Radio/TV cycle and/or additional Digital use).
  • Notify client service of upcoming Radio/TV dormancies and Digital cycle expiries. Client service to advise if new cycles are to be paid, and to remove creative from digital if not renewing.
  • Renegotiate buy-out/union talent, AFM Music/Music license for subsequent use, as required.
  • Coordinate adaptations with U.S agencies (requesting estimates for TV/WEB, paying Holding Fees, Tracking cycles, etc…)
  • Field International requests for foreign talent/music usage of our creative. Create job launch and residual estimate for foreign agency to approve. Send requested elements to international agency, as needed. Negotiate and facilitate payments as required.
  • Generate Miscellaneous, Storage, Dubs/Distribution, Retainer & Broadcast Fee estimates and update as required.
  • Facilitate Transfer of Rights for all unions when acquiring or losing client assignments.
  • Obtain all transfer paperwork to ensure access to old creative and files.
  • Maintain records of residual and dubbing information.
  • Trouble shooting / “detective” work when paperwork provided is incomplete or missing (i.e. searching for archived material, traffic instructions, contracts and completion reports).

  • Possess understanding of various unions and their rules
  • Work as a team member in liaison with account service, production and media
  • Ability to multi-task on various accounts
