Braille Transcription Specialist & Administrator

Full-Time, Permanent Toronto, ON Reports to: Manager, ePub and Braille Publishing Direct Reports: No Join us in our mission to change what it is to be blind in Canada. We\'re looking for a mission-driven Braille Transcription Specialist & Administrator who is passionate about creating more accessible, inclusive, and equitable communities across Canada where people with low vision have unlimited opportunities and can experience life free from barriers and discrimination.

Your Impact at CNIB

  • Provide administrative and program support for Beyond Print\xe2\x80\x99s braille services by streamlining and maintaining the processes and coordination of all braille requests and management of workflow.
  • Produce braille materials for external organizations and other CNIB divisions and businesses by assessing requirements and providing feedback.
  • Thorough knowledge of Braille codes and Formats.
  • Beta test braille translation software programs and processes to improve production and participate in future development of braille publishing techniques.
  • Maintain customer relations and coordinate communications with Braille Volunteers to ensure requests are fulfilled/met.
  • Evaluate files in XML, Word and DBT (Duxbury Braille Translation) to create books and materials for CELA, including PrintBraille, to meet monthly production targets: prepare and validate XML files for braille codes and structure; import XML files into the Duxbury Braille Translation Software Program (DBT).
Requirements

Who you are:

Education and Certifications
  • Degree or diploma in related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Post-secondary education in humanities, computer or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years in a braille or other production environment.
  • Proficiency in specialized braille codes: UEB, Music, etc., is an asset.
  • Background in publishing technique, mark-up languages (XML), book content and structure.
  • Knowledge of Braille Translation software (Duxbury).
Experience and Qualifications
  • UEB certification mandatory (or completion of UEB (Unified English Braille) certification course required within first year of employment).
  • Excellent problem solving and decision making ability.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task in an organized manner.
  • Good relationship builder and networking skills with a variety of stakeholders; approachable.
  • Professional attitude, results oriented, strategic and flexible; willing to adapt in a changing environment and work as part of a team in a fast-paced multi-task setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; other languages an asset.
  • Strong computer/desktop applications and file management.
  • Document formatting, and understanding of structure.
  • Knowledge of Braille Translation software.
  • Analytical, literate, detail oriented, well organized, and able to work with little supervision.
  • Knowledge of music and math an asset.
  • Personal or professional experience relating to blindness and sight loss is considered an asset.
  • Personal or professional experience working with assistive technology and/or accessible environments is considered an asset.
