Take ownership of the day-to-day accounting function at a fast-paced downtown Victoria law firm. This role focuses on trust compliance, accurate financial reporting, and smooth payroll and payables. It's a good fit for a detail-oriented professional who values independence, clear standards, and being a trusted partner to lawyers and staff.

Key responsibilities
1. Trust accounting
Prepare monthly 3-way trust reconciliations and resolve variances promptly.
Post receipts/disbursements, maintain client trust ledgers, and support the Annual Trust Report in compliance with Law Society of British Columbia rules.
2. General accounting
Manage AP/AR, bank and credit card reconciliations, month-end close, and working papers.
Prepare GST and PST returns; support year-end and external accountants.
3. Payroll and benefits
Process semi-monthly payroll, T4/T4A, ROE, benefits deductions, WCB employer reporting.
Handle WorkSafeBC employer reporting and related reconciliations.
4. Systems and controls
Maintain accounting policies, trust controls, and audit trails.
Improve processes and checklists.
5. Collaboration
Partner with operations and lawyers on file billing, cost recoveries, retainers, and write-offs.
Provide timely, accurate reporting to firm leadership.
Must-have qualifications
Minimum 3 or more years of full-cycle bookkeeping, including at least 1 year in a Canadian regulated professional services setting such as a law firm or accounting firm.
Hands-on experience completing monthly 3-way trust reconciliations to LSBC standards.
Strong Canadian payroll experience, including T4 or T4A and ROE.
Experience with GST or HST and BC PST filings, bank reconciliations, and month-end close.
Knowledge of basic Canadian employment standards as they affect payroll and vacation pay.
High accuracy, confidentiality, and sound judgment appropriate to a law office environment.
Assets (nice to have)
CPB Canada certification or in-progress pathway. CPA or CPA-PEP in progress is an asset.
Experience with legal accounting systems such as ESILAW, PCLaw, or Unity Accounting.
Familiarity with QuickBooks or similar general accounting software.
Experience contributing to the LSBC Annual Trust Report package.
Education
Diploma or certificate in accounting or bookkeeping, or equivalent experience.
Ongoing professional development encouraged. The firm supports relevant training such as LSBC trust-accounting sessions.
