GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:
With over 42 years of operations, Skills for Change is a highly respected non-profit charity with a province wide reputation for pioneering programs that respond to shifting immigration and workplace trends and lead to employment. We offer a range of accelerated programs including mentoring, employment, settlement, language training together with specialized programs for skilled trades, women, and youth. We have 5 locations across the GTA and serve 16,000 clients annually. We believe we are in the best position to provide thought leadership through evidence-based programming, impact stories and proactive policy advocacy using knowledge mobilization products.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
The Black Community Access Programming (BCAP) team envisions a Canada where Anti-Black racism is eradicated, paving the way for
economic empowerment and greater Black representation across labour markets, and achieves this by investing in Black Futures by
providing the training, career-enabling resources, and holistic support needed to thrive in the workforce and broader society. BCAP
programs and services are designed to provide learning and development opportunities that address anti-Black racism and build
community connections that improve wellbeing, inclusion, and support workforce integration.
The ideal candidate has:
Knowledge about Greater Toronto's Black African-diasporic communities, with a particular emphasis in supporting youth (14-
18), LGBTQi2S+ community, immigrants and refugees, and the issues facing members of those communities.
We encourage applications from candidates who identify as Black or identify with the African diaspora.
Knowledge of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion best practices and Anti-Black Racism frameworks. A strong commitment to
maintaining high standards of culturally responsive service delivery.
? Proven experience in designing and facilitating engaging and educational activities (e.g., icebreakers, teambuilders) and
workshops to a variety of audiences and in topics related to any of the following: science/technology/engineering/arts/math
exposure, life-skills, personal development, well-being, and inclusion. Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel,
and PowerPoint). You'll use these tools to create materials and support clients in their learning journey.
? Familiarity with community resources and services, with emphasis on young people's mental health and wellness.
? Demonstrated ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential matters with discretion, and effective problem solving.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
? Develop, promote, and deliver activities and workshops for Black youth, adults, and/or seniors.
? Facilitate activities and workshops at =multiple locations within the GTA.
? Create and maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment within programs. Ensure workshops are accessible for participants
with varying levels of prior knowledge.
? Effectively apply key workshop facilitation skills: managing time, providing clear instructions and asking insightful questions,
listening actively, addressing group needs and any challenging behaviours, and getting participants engaged and excited.
? Support with conducting thorough client intake assessments, considering individual needs, safety risk levels, and information
related to settlement and programs within the organization.
? Support with the coordination of program schedules and participant communications.
? Make appropriate referrals to other community programs and within Skills for Change.
? Maintain up-to-date participant and program records using Office 365 and designated databases, ensuring data accuracy and
integrity.
? Collect both qualitative and quantitative data (e.g., participant feedback, surveys, progress, challenges).
? Generate workshop program summaries and reports.
? Participate in areas of professional development and training that are critical to the needs the client population.
? Prepare for and participate in regular scheduled supervision, team meetings and other internal and external committees as
required.
? Maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism as outlined in agency privacy and confidentiality policy.
? Be flexible to take on other duties as required by management based on department needs.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:
? Post-Secondary degree in social work, education, community development, psychology, race/gender/ethnic studies and/or
credentials as a Social Worker, Community (Support) Worker or Career Counsellor is preferred, but the organization will be
interested in any candidates with relevant experience, or any transferrable skills that could be repurposed for the role.
? Demonstrated experience in group work and group facilitation skills, preferrable in a community or non profit environment.
? Skilled at facilitation via virtual platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Blackboard, etc.
? Excellent communication skills.
? Ability to work flexible hours. Some programs are delivered consistently in the evenings and on weekends. Work schedules will
be adjusted to accommodate required program delivery times.
? Experience operating from an anti-Black racism lens. Sensitivity to diverse perspectives and commitment to equity are critical.
? Ability to provide a clear, mandatory vulnerable sector check prior to employment.
