This position reports directly to the Senior Research Advisor and operates within a collaborative team environment with other staff in the Nursing Research Office and with Nursing faculty, their staff, and research trainees (undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral fellows).
The Biostatistician is an expert in a specialized area. This position requires analytical and technological skills to advance research productivity for multiple Nursing faculty simultaneously. This position requires the ability to deliver individual or group consultation/advice to support research processes in the Faculty of Nursing. The position requires the ability to work collaboratively with other teams. The position requires independent decision-making capabilities in an environment of continuous change and shifting priorities. This position is required to meet multiple competing deadlines related to submission of research operating grant applications and manuscripts, as well as provide timely consultation and data analysis support for multiple nursing researchers.
This position requires the ability to consistently use discretion, maintain professionalism, confidentiality and composure under pressure, demonstrate adaptability and flexibility, and provide efficient, quality service. This position is situated in an environment where there may be ambiguity, continuous change, and shifting priorities.
This is a 0.6FTE fixed term part-time position for approximately 12 months, with the possibility of extension. This position is part of the AUPE bargaining unit. The normal workday is 7 hours per day, as selected Monday through Friday. Additional hours during the evenings and/or weekends may be required from time to time.
Summary of Key Responsibilities
(job functions include but are not limited to):
Design data collection instruments and provide data solutions as required for research projects.
Manage/manipulate large, complex data sets, including clinical databases, administrative health data, and electronic medical records.
Perform statistical analyses using various methods and provides analytic solutions for complex and challenging research questions.
Prepare results, contribute to interpretation of results, and write summaries of data analyses for manuscripts and scientific presentations.
Provide consultation/advice to Faculty and their trainees and staff on the design and implementation of diverse research designs and biostatistical approaches.
Provide consultation/advice to faculty and their trainees and staff on operational definitions of variables, measurement, including psychometrics, and data analytic plans.
Provide advice on programming or general statistical software issues.
Provide advice related to data entry, cleaning, recoding, statistical analysis, and efficient data management practices.
Provide consultation and advice related to writing the Methods, Results, and Discussion sections of manuscripts, such as the statistical limitations of the study.
Provide advice related to the design of tables and graphs for manuscripts and scientific presentations.
Assist researchers to monitor timelines and expenses for their research operating grants to ensure timely and on-budget completion.
Develop respectful, constructive, and cooperative working relationships with Nursing Research Office staff, Nursing Faculty and research trainees and staff.
Contribute positively to the team environment within the Nursing Research Office through effective collaboration with the team.
Assess the methods and data analysis sections of internal grant applications submitted to the Research, Scholarship and Awards Committee at the request of the Associate Dean, Innovation and Research.
Be accountable to report actual or potential breaches in ethical and/or academic integrity.
Qualifications / Requirements:
A Master's degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, and/or health services research with a minimum of 5 years' experience, preferably in an academic or health systems environment.
Ability to effectively manage multiple competing demands with tact and diplomacy to complete projects on time and within budget.
Expertise with the research process from conceptualization to research design, protocol development, implementation, data analysis, interpretation, and writing manuscripts/reports.
A deep understanding of predictive modeling and statistical concepts, machine learning approaches, and critical thinking ability to develop advanced methods to innovate health data science.
Expertise in sample size calculation and power analysis.
Expertise with linkage and analysis of large administrative and/or longitudinal datasets and interpretation of results.
Ability to work with biostatistical software packages including, but not limited to SPSS, R, SAS, Python, and STATA.
Ability to work independently and as part of multiple teams including Nursing Research Office staff and Faculty research teams.
Must be able to protect sensitive health care and research data & understand regulations and policy from both the Office of Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (FOIP & HIA) and the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (CHREB).
Experience with research project budgets and timelines.
Highly skilled in oral and written communication.
Ability to clearly communicate statistical concepts in lay language to health researchers and clinicians required.
Strong facilitation, negotiation, leadership, and customer service skills.
Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail.
Knowledge of the University's culture, policies, and practices is considered an asset.
