Overview




The Ktunaxa Nation Council has an opportunity for Terrestrial Biologist in Cranbrook BC. Reporting to the Manager, Mining Oversight, this position engages in the protection and resource management of ?amak?is Ktunaxa with a focus on mining. It position requires a background in biology and natural resource management, and provides technical expertise with a strong focus on biodiversity and reclamation.
At the direction of the Manager, Mining Oversight, Terrestrial Biologist will provide information on impacts within ?amak?is Ktunaxa and recommendations on terrestrial stewardship issues, to Ktunaxa Nation Council staff, Ktunaxa governance bodies, stewardship committees and citizens to inform KNC participation in environmental assessments and land use applications. The position works across teams to coordinate the responses and engage with community about impacts from mining and other land uses

This is a full-time permanent position with full benefits. Salary: $76,701 - $87,074

Responsibilities




Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide technical support in Mining related Environmental Assessment (EA) Processa. Assessment of baseline studies, Application Information Requirements, assessments, application review, and throughout the EA process;

b. Participate on Technical Working Groups as required, including Cumulative Effects Management Framework (CEMF), Biodiversity Management Planning, Terrestrial Working Groups for numerous EA's etc.;

2. Provide technical support to other Mining Applications and general referrals arising from the duty to consult.a. Review referral applications and identify potential reclamation, wildlife or habitat concerns based on proposed project information. Follow up as required;b. Develop mitigation strategies for major and/or high-risk project developments by conducting impact assessments and inspections;c. Provide technical support including assessment of impacts to ecosystem functions by other land use applications within ?amak?is Ktunaxa;

3. Provide technical support with respect to reclamation, wildlife and biodiversity stewardship within ?amak?is Ktunaxa.a. Participate on terrestrial related committees as directed;

b. Assess and develop recommendations on terrestrial stewardship actions in ?amak?is Ktunaxa.

i. Develop technical assessment of actions;

ii. Work with Lands staff, committees and communities to engage and gather feedback;

iii. Engage with citizens and Chiefs and Councils on issues and incorporate this perspective into the decision-making process; iv. Under the direction of the Manager, Mining Oversight, provide briefings and recommendations to leadership for further direction and decision

4. Education and Outreacha. Develop and provide education and training opportunities to citizens on fieldwork and methodologies;

b. Develop and provide educational materials for citizens and youth on wildlife, habitats, and wildlife stewardship related issues

c. In cooperation with the Community Engagement Team, work with Lands staff and communities on increasing citizen-on-the-land opportunities.

5. Safety on the joba. All KNC staff are accountable for contributing to the overall safety results of KNC. This requires a commitment to a 'safety mentality' while on the job: i.e. safety of self and others is prioritized over other objectives. Contributions include: willingness to conform to safety procedures and standards; identifying and responding appropriately to hazards; promptly and accurately reporting incidents and near misses; using the correct tools and equipment, including PPE, for the job and individual tasks; maintaining up-to-date safety certifications; participating in safety meetings; participating in pre-job safety plans and executing the work according to those plans.

Bachelor degree - theoretical proficiency in a specialized field
BSc in Biology with specific emphasis on wildlife or Natural Resource Management (or closely related field) with at least 5 years of professional experience required OR MSc in Biology or Natural Resource Management (or closely related field) with at least 3 years of experience required.

Experience / Expertise


3-5 years professional experience related to natural resource management in an Indigenous context.
Knowledge and experience participating in the Environmental Assessment process.
Knowledge and experience with respect to mining and reclamation practices.
Knowledge and experience working with wildlife and biota of ?amak?is Ktunaxa.
Project management experience including development and management of work plans, budgets and consultant deliverables.
Considerable experience with computers and Microsoft Office.
Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, Ktunaxa culture, traditions and values.
A valid drivers' license and a good driving record.
