The opportunity:
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented laboratory technician to oversee blood and urine collection, ensuring high-quality sample acquisition and participant safety. This role involves performing venipuncture, correctly labeling blood tubes and urine specimen containers, and providing clear instructions for urine sample collection. The technician will also be responsible for handling and processing bio-specimens, adhering to strict laboratory protocols for sample preparation, scanning collection tubes into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and conducting basic hematological tests using the Beckman Coulter Analyzer. Maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance with study guidelines are key aspects of this position.
Additionally, the role includes performing regular calibration and daily quality control of laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance of instruments such as the Sysmex Hematology Analyzer, centrifuge, and freezers. The technician will be responsible for reagent and inventory control, proper waste disposal, and maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment in accordance with established quality standards. Troubleshooting equipment issues and collaborating with technical support will be required when necessary. A commitment to precision, safety, and adherence to standard operating procedures is essential for success in this role.
The qualifications and experience we're looking for:
Master's degree in a related study area.
OR
Bachelor's degree or completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with three years directly related experience.
Must be a graduate of an approved Medical Lab Assistant or Medical Laboratory Technology education program.
Must be eligible for or certified by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) or have attained certification in Medical Lab Assistant or Medical Laboratory Technology by a certifying body recognized by the Province of Manitoba.
Must be eligible for licensure with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM) or Canadian Phlebotomy Technicians Group Inc. or Shared Health Manitoba.
3 years or more experience in venipuncture with older adults is required.
Previous experience in preparing (e.g., pipetting) and processing blood samples (e.g. use of a centrifuge and blood analyzer) is an asset.
Previous experience in conducting basic hematological tests and interpreting analysis from such tests and performing quality control tests is an asset.
Experience with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is an asset.
Experience in research setting and/or previous work with older adults is an asset.
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Familiarity and understanding of good laboratory practice is required.
Excellent interpersonal skills are required in working with the site team and study participants is required.
The ability to work independently and as a team member is required.
Abilities to plan, organize, and carry out the research study as per standard operating procedures is required.
Attention to detail is required.
Knowledge of the Beckman Coulter AcT DIFF Hematology Analyzer is an asset.
Extensive on-the-job training on the CLSA standard operating procedures for the collection, preparation and processing of bio-specimens as well as with the study computer software is provided
