The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a talented Bioinformatician II to join its Data Curation and Bioinformatics team under the Data Coordination Centre (DCC) of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) Accelerating Research in Genomic Oncology (ARGO) ( ). As a successful candidate, you will help to meet ARGO\xe2\x80\x99s ambitious goal of uniformly analyzing the genomes of more than 100,000 participants and linking these data to high-quality clinical information. This data will be used by cancer researchers around the world to develop new diagnostics and therapeutics for cancer.

The responsibilities include:

  • Provide technical support to ICGC ARGO program members for resolving data submission issues and to ensure smooth data processing.
  • Provide Helpdesk support for external users in an efficient and timely manner on data inquiries such as data accessibility, data download and portal functionality.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining analysis pipelines and computational workflows to perform uniform analyses.
  • Perform routine workflow execution, monitoring and debugging for ICGC-ARGO processing center in the Regional Data Processing Centre.
  • Assist in implementation of tools for data quality control, validation and reporting.
  • Perform benchmarking tests to evaluate different solutions and suggest optimizations.
  • Support business analysts to assist the translation of bioinformatics needs into software functional requirements and specifications.
  • Evaluates implemented solutions and tools against requirements and use cases.
  • Contribute to preparing and maintaining documentation of standard operating procedures and user guides.
  • Other assigned scripting and data handling tasks.
Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree or higher in bioinformatics, genomics, computational biology, or computer sciences, or equivalent education or work experience.
  • Good understanding of molecular biology concepts and genetics.
  • Extensive programming experience with Python, preferably in large-scale projects.
  • Experience with bioinformatics resources, databases, tools and common standard formats.
  • Working experience in analyzing large genomics datasets (raw sequencing data, gene expression, germline and somatic mutational events, copy number variants, methylation, etc.).
  • Expertise with good software development practices, including using version control and build/test automation and issue tracking system (ie. git, JIRA).
  • Experience using existing scientific workflow systems, such as CWL/WDL/Nextflow is an asset
  • Experience with container software (docker, singularity)
  • Common bioinformatic tools like samtools, GATK, etc \xe2\x80\xa6
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment and meet required timelines.
  • Be highly detail-oriented and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Communicates effectively with multiple stakeholders including researchers and staff in a diverse team environment.
