The opportunity:
The person who holds this position will be the head of Data Management and Bioinformatics in the lab. This will include managing and training staff and trainees involved in data analytics, leading 'omics analyses of large projects using advanced statistical modeling techniques, managing bioinformatic pipelines, managing QC and data quality, developing and managing databases and data access for lab members and collaborators, guiding others in data analytics, as well as providing bioinformatics/statistical support to the laboratory under the direction of the principal investigator in the THRiVE Discovery lab.
This person is expected to be the primary lead in writing selected manuscripts for publication in scientific journals. This will include being the lead on the analysis and writing of manuscripts for specific collaborative projects that are funded by CIHR, the NIH, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Welcome Trust. The person will be expected to present this data at international meetings with collaborators or conferences. Other responsibilities of this position will include development of R-based tools for management of 'omics data from the lab, the generation of reports to support the aims of the CIHR, NIH, BMGF and Welcome sub-awards, carry out smaller components of collaborative research projects, assisting in the publication of results from other lab members and the development of new hypotheses for grant applications.
The qualifications and experience we're looking for:
Master's degree in bioinformatics, Statistics, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Data Science or other relevant fields and at least four years of work experience.
Minimum four years of work experience in managing large scale datasets and interpreting systems biology or related biological data.
Experience in studying 'omics data from human clinical populations.
Experience in programming for handling large datasets.
Experience in writing scientific manuscripts.
Detailed knowledge of advanced statistical data analysis, including but not restricted to survival analysis, mixed modelling, linear regression, multivariate models, and related analyses is required.
Proficiency in the R programming language is required.
Working knowledge of MS windows and MS Office is required.
Knowledge of epidemiology and statistics are required; familiarity of epidemiological and microbiome research in the context of biological data is preferred.
Strong communication skills in English, both oral and written, are required.
Ability to communicate research data both orally and in writing, including presenting posters/seminars at scientific meetings is required.
Ability to conduct independent scientific research, interpret data, and demonstrated ability to publish results in peer reviewed journals is required.
Ability to work collaboratively with a team is required.
Ability to coherently articulate scientific principles related to bioinformatics, statistics, and other relevant fields is required.
