Description:

Research, teaching, and practice in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) often rest on the unquestioned assertion of the impartial analyses of facts. This course will take a data-informed approach to understanding how human biases can, and have, affected science and its applications in a range of fields, with a particular focus on biology. Case studies may include reviews of how science has been used to justify or sustain racism, colonialism, enslavement, and the exploitation of marginalized groups. Links will be drawn to contemporary societal challenges, practices, and technologies. Topics will include how biases can shape science in terms of the questions under study, scientific inferences, and the types of knowledge and assumptions that inform applications, shape teaching, and influence popular understanding. Data on bias and societal costs of bias will be reviewed, as well as evidence-informed practices, structures, and individual actions which could ensure that STEMM disrupt

Minimum Qualifications

Successful candidates should be near completion of their Ph.D. Candidates should have experience in teaching and a strong background in principles of equity, diversity and inclusion as it applies to the sciences (for example, from previous coursework, committee work, or volunteer activities), and a strong background in biology is required.


Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

Duties


----------


Specific duties include designing and delivering lectures, guiding student discussions and managing in person discussions on equity, diversity and inclusion in STEMM. Designing and marking writing assignments and exams, office hours and miscellaneous clerical tasks. Please note duties are performed in person at the UTSC campus.



Please note all course elements are in person at the UTSC campus. There are no hybrid options in the Department of Biological Sciences at UTSC for lectures, tutorials, laboratories or exams.
