Swahili, Kinyarwanda & Kirundi languages needed



(Short-term contracts to June 2026)



ISANS is seeking two part-time

Biliteracy EAL Instructors for Literacy Learners

to provide specialized instruction for literacy learners who are English as an Additional Language (EAL) students to develop the language and classroom skills they need to join regular LINC programming, using their home language(s).

Reporting to the Supervisor and the Manager, Language Services, these positions will be responsible for:

Duties and Responsibilities:



Develop and implement engaging and effective instructional strategies to support literacy development in both English and the student's home language. Design and deliver comprehensive lessons that focus on phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing skills, and oral language development Utilize a variety of teaching resources, such as authentic texts, culturally relevant materials, and digital tools, to enhance students' biliteracy skills. Ensure the curriculum aligns with relevant language proficiency standards and Canadian Language Benchmarks, taking into account the unique challenges faced by literacy learners in their home language and English. Explore different methodologies for biliteracy education in a multi-lingual EAL foundational literacy class. Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that values students' cultural backgrounds and fosters a positive attitude toward language learning. Incorporate culturally diverse and relevant content into lessons, integrating literature, traditions, and customs from students' home language and English-speaking cultures. Promote cross-cultural communication and understanding, encouraging students to engage in meaningful interactions in both languages. Collaborate with other educators to identify areas for improvement and develop appropriate interventions and support strategies. Stay updated with the latest research, best practices, and instructional techniques related to biliteracy instruction and literacy development for EAL students. Collaborate with colleagues and educational professionals to share resources, exchange ideas, and contribute to the development of effective biliteracy programs. Engage in reflective practices, seeking continuous improvement and growth in instructional techniques and approaches.

General responsibilities:



Providing information as required for internal/external reports and proposals Reviewing and adhering to ISANS workplace policies and procedures Recording all relevant client information on databases in a consistent and timely manner as appropriate to the position Photocopying and filing documents Participating fully in regular staff meetings, team meetings, training and development and ISANS events

The ideal candidates for these positions will have the following:



Education:



Bachelors Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted Recognized TESL qualification Completion of the CLB Bootcamp online training (http://learn.language.ca/)

Experience:



2 years' experience in a similar position teaching adults Experience working in a cross-cultural environment; delivering direct service to immigrants preferred Experience working with CLB and Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) Experience in online teaching Experience in EAL curriculum development an asset

Knowledge:



Understanding and knowledge of adult education principles

Strong written and verbal English communication skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong time management and organizational skills Proficient with MS Office applications Additional languages an asset
