Position Summary:

A lecture and laboratory course that takes a thematic approach to the study of invertebrate zoology, with a focus on functional morphology, developmental processes, and modes of reproduction, and on how these types of studies combined with molecular evidence and cladistic analysis provide insight into the evolutionary relationships amongst the major invertebrate groups. In addition, the contribution of the invertebrates to the functioning of healthy ecosystems, and the need to conserve diversity in these important organisms will be examined.

Learning Outcomes: * Describe the evolutionary relationships among major freshwater invertebrate phyla.

• Recognize the important anatomical and physiological adaptions that allow invertebrates to thrive in terrestrial and aquatic environments.
• Describe the ecological roles played by common invertebrate taxa.
• Describe geographic patterns of invertebrate diversity and identify important biodiversity hotspots for invertebrates.
• Explain how stressors such as pollution, climate change, and invasive species are impacting invertebrate biodiversity.
• Evaluate a piece of primary literature in the field of invertebrate biology and conservation and be able to offer insightful criticism on the material.
• Create oral and written summaries of published studies in the scientific literature and effectively communicate this material to others.
