Posting ends: July 15, 2023

Position Summary:

Factors that govern population growth, including intra- and inter-specific competition, foraging behaviour, resource partitioning, predator-prey dynamics, parasitism and mutualism will be examined using observational and experimental data as well as mathematical models. Applied topics in population ecology including harvesting, preservation and management, and biological control will be discussed. Laboratory work will focus on sampling methodology, patterns of density and dispersion, predator-prey interactions, and competitive interactions. Students will present seminars on current topics in population ecology.

Learning Outcomes: * Understand and apply mathematical models to describe the growth of single species populations.

  • Understand the factors that regulate population growth within a species and explain how these factors are incorporated into population growth models.
  • Incorporate age structures into population growth models and use them to predict future population growth.
  • Understand the concepts behind metapopulation biology and how simple metapopulation models can be used to simulate population dynamics.
  • Identify different life history strategies and discuss how differences in these strategies might impact population growth.
  • Understand and apply mathematical models to describe growth in interacting populations (competition, predation, mutualism, host-parasite dynamics).
  • Evaluate the factors that influence the growth of a population and select the appropriate mathematical models to describe population dynamics in that population.
  • Develop an oral presentation that effectively summarizes material on a specific topic within the natural sciences.
Topics Covered:

Fundamentals of population growth; population growth models; density dependent growth; logistic growth; the Allee effect; populations with age structure; sex ratios and life tables; metapopulation ecology; metapopulations in nature; life history strategies; models for age at first reproduction; fecundity and lifespan; resource dynamics and competition; interspecific competition; the Lotka-Volterra model; evidence for competition from nature; predator/prey interactions; physiological ecology; foraging behaviour; parasitism; mutualism.
