Position Summary: Ecology is the part of biology that examines the interrelationships between organisms and their environment, a topic that is critical for understanding the implications of the rapid environmental changes we are currently facing. This course will focus on the individual, population, and community levels of ecology. Each of these units will delivered in the context of societally important issues including ecosystem services, habitat loss and fragmentation, and climate change.
Learning Outcomes:

  • To understand fundamental ecological principles and theories, including: how individual organisms interact with their environment; population growth and regulation within suitable habitats across their range; the nature of change within communities and ecosystems; and important landscape-level factors;
  • To demonstrate awareness of the interconnectedness among major ecological concepts and current ecological problems;
  • To evaluate ecological research considering current global and societal ecological needs, including climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation, and ecosystem services;
  • To demonstrate improved scientific literacy and further development of competencies, including critical analysis of information, teamwork, communication, problem identification, and information synthesis.
