Position Overview
The Camp - Behaviour Management Specialist supports the Inclusion Camp Director in delivering a city-wide special needs summer camp and volunteer program. This role provides daily guidance to camp staff in managing participants with challenging behaviors, assists in training, and develops behavioral strategies and program adaptations. The Specialist serves as a liaison between parents, staff, and stakeholders, ensures camper and volunteer data is maintained, and coordinates transportation needs. Additionally, they monitor safety, wellbeing, and manage incident reports. This position requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and expertise in behavior management and inclusive programming.
Responsibilities

  • Assists the Inclusion Camp Director in the development, implementation and delivery of the city-wide special needs summer camp and volunteer program.
  • Provide daily direction and support to inclusion camp staff, and other camp staff as it relates to participants with challenging behaviours.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of a training program for inclusion and camp staff.
  • Assist with the necessary research, development and implementation of training for program adaptation.
  • Assist in the recruitment, development, implementation, supervision and coaching of city-wide inclusion program.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and resources to summer camp staff, inclusion staff and volunteers.
  • Performs data entry of participants volunteers into the departmental software system.
  • Assist in the assessment of special needs campers; maintain ongoing communication with parents/guardians; ensure that all documentation is completed and circulated to appropriate staff.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the parents, participants and staff in the form of pre-entrance meetings, updates and problem solving.
  • Assist in developing rapport with participants with behavior or with a mental health illness and participants with disabilities, their families, professional and support staff, and various levels of staff from community centres.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all campers and staff during camp hours by proactively taking mitigating actions, recommending adaptive programming, behavioural plans, and arrange for appropriate support.
  • Assist with the monitoring of busing needs for campers with special needs and help parents/guardians and Camp Directors in the co-ordination of this service as required.
  • Maintains data base of participants with disabilities current.
  • Responsible for the collection of accident and incident reports city wide and distributes documents and reports, charts and graphs, to the full-time staff when necessary.
  • Assists with the storage and the revision of documentation of incident/accidents reports.
  • Carry out any other duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Must have completed a minimum of two years of post-secondary education in the field of Social Work education, Recreation related discipline, or equivalent knowledge and experience in therapeutic recreation; OR minimum (1) year experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Minimum 2 years previous experience in recreational setting and working with challenging behaviours and /or individuals with disabilities.
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR-C certification.
  • There (3) months valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Provide personal care (toileting, feeding and changing) and lifts and transfers as needed.
  • Ability to support staff during swim.
  • Safe Management certification/Non-Violent Crisis Prevention certification is an asset.
  • High Five, Principles of Healthy Child Development certification.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and have access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Full attendance at pre-camp training.
