to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating heavy equipment in utility construction environments, with a focus on
road excavation, concrete breaking, and working safely around underground utilities
. The role requires precision, awareness of utility hazards, and the ability to support crews in delivering high-quality excavation and restoration projects.
Key Responsibilities
Operate backhoes and related heavy equipment to complete
excavation, trenching, and material handling
.
Perform
concrete and asphalt breaking/removal
for road, boulevard, and utility cut projects.
Work safely around
underground and overhead utilities
, following all regulations and company procedures.
Read and interpret
plans, locates, and markings
to ensure safe and accurate digging.
Excavate trenches and road cuts to grade and depth specifications with minimal disturbance to surrounding areas.
Load, move, and place materials such as gravel, soil, concrete, and asphalt.
Conduct daily
pre-trip inspections
, monitor equipment performance, and report mechanical issues promptly.
Assist ground crews when required, including spotting, shoveling, and site preparation.
Maintain a clean and safe work area, ensuring compliance with
safety standards and environmental regulations
.
Communicate effectively with foremen, supervisors, and team members to complete projects on schedule.
Qualifications & Skills
Valid driver's license
Minimum
2-3 years of experience
operating a backhoe or similar equipment in construction or utility work.
Strong knowledge of
safe digging practices (Hydrovac, One Call locates, etc.)
.
Experience with
road excavation, concrete/asphalt removal, and backfilling
.
Ability to read and follow
site plans, locates, and utility maps
.
Proven ability to work safely in high-traffic and utility-dense environments.
Physically fit and able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Assets
Experience in
municipal or utility construction projects
.
Knowledge of
City of Winnipeg standards
.
Safety certifications such as
First Aid, WHMIS, Confined Space, or Ground Disturbance
.
